85 91 manual steering rack.

Postby liamcole007 » Fri Dec 31, 2021 8:40 pm

Good evening & happy new years to all.

i have a mk3 transit 91 on going project

Needed to shuffle the old bird around - Off the drive it came, full lock right and it felt like the steering wheel just collapsed and went past the "full" lock stage, full lock left seemed fine.

got the hunch the non power steering rack has had its day (possible I'm wrong?) - that led to google searches and phone calls, little luck on the phone didn't find anyone locally who could help or really give me any information.
have found a couple of 2nd hand steering racks, ideal world would be to get it reconditioned.

appreciate any help!

Before rushing to get a rack on a hunch wouldn't it be an idea to have a look underneath :?: a broken wishbone or dodgy bottom ball joint can give falling over feel.

On my mk 3 camper with a manual rack it started getting really stiff after a time with it only running at weekends so I removed it and had it in a vice with the near side of it hanging down and with the rack gators removed off the housing end I poured oil in the pinion end and kept working it lock to lock until oil was comeing out the bottom end freed it up really nicely. The uj on the bottom of the steering column can also stiffen up with it not moving a lot on the yokes I’ve freed them off before with WD40 even with it been a sealed unit that can be done on the van without removing it completely off the van just disconnect the top end to work it about .
