Bolt up Trim constantly changing

Postby Kyzza » Sun Jan 16, 2022 9:16 am

Hey all,

Seeking advice as to what can cause the bolt up trim to change.

Ive recently replaced a timing belt after receiving a bolt up trim error P1178 (timing belt was previously changed about 2 years and 20,000kms ago).

The van was running fine after the change two days ago and with some tweaking I was able to get the 'Bolt up trim' to 0 degrees using FORScan.

Now however the P1178 and MIL light have returned. I reconnected my ELM reader and bolt up trim is now varying between 1.50 degrees and 2.63 degrees.

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas as to what's caused the change/if it's normal.

Ive replaced the belt and tensioner with a new belt, timed using the appropriate timing pegs and adjusted the bolts on the fuel pump to get it to 0 degrees initially.

The van is a Mk5 transit 2.5DI 85ps.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like there isn't enough tension on the cambelt?

Will retime and check the tensioner.

Any way to check correct tension? After timing I usually rotate the engine twice and check the pins still line up. All was good there. And belt deflection didn't seem to be more than 5mm

Also I just got home from work and didn't have the MIL at all today (To or from work). Plugged in the ELM scanner again and Bolt up Trim was reading 0 degrees again - very odd.

Which type of tensioner do you have? the single or 2 bolt type?

I've fitted the newer auto tensioner the last two changes. I do still have the old manual tensioner in a box somewhere.

The EPIC is fussy on timing (as you have seen)...

If you have the older 2 bolt type tensioner - I would keep that on an EPIC!

Thanks for your help @MinorMatt

I'll see if I can find a new two bolt tensioner, if not I'll refit the old one and see how it goes!

Fingers crossed

It appears that the engine Bolt up trim as a default of 2.00 degrees. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this... I've finally got the time to look at the timing again today and it's now sitting between -0.63 and 0 degrees where it sits on 0 degrees and occasionally dips down to -0.63 however being below 2 degrees there is no MIL.

The 2 degree default is noticed whenever the engine is initially started, the bolt up trim sits at 2 degrees for a little bit before reverting to the current timing.
