Rised fuel consumption 2.5DI

Postby Ransettimies » Sun Feb 27, 2022 9:25 am

Soon ive owned my transit a one year / 15000km.
First 3000km consumption at spring/summer was 29 uk mpg / 9.7 liters 100km. Then i adjusted fuel pump (first time because there were factory seals on) and i got about 33 uk mpg / 8.5 liters 100km.

When winter came consumption was first 29 uk mpg which is ok to me. But now its been 3-4months about 24 uk mpg / 11.7 liters 100km. Ive checked torque sleeve etc and all good. Engine runs very well, starts and accelerates. No excessive black smoke and climbs hills nicely. Brakes are not grinding.

What to look next? I use block heater and its been same degrees then first of winter so it cant effect. My driving routes are being whole year the same.

Winter diesel (in the UK at least) give less MPG due to the additives preventing it from waxing in the cold ?
that could be your issue and diesel consumption is allways worse in cold weather no matter the fuel used as it makes less heat when burning (than petrol) it takes longer to heat the engine and run at maximum efficiency :?

When winter beginned fuel was same then as now. And outside temps is being same. Yes its been colder also but fuel consumption has been same.

I know also that cold will raise consumption vs summer but thats too much. I drove minimum 10miles when i start my van.

Has it had a service recently, valve clearances checked?
I would be happy with 24 mpg, think I get nearer 20 mpg but then mine does spend a lot of it's time with a good load and I aint a sunday driver

Ive been serviced it good, air filter fluids etc but ive not checked/adjusted valve clearance

But will it reduce power and make more noise when clearance is too big?

Now i noticed that when im changing gear, engine rpm stays high about second when clutch is pressed down and foot is off at throttle. Does same at idle. Give throttle and it stays little bit there after throttle is released. At idle it also tooks revs very fast when i press throttle.

There is something wrong at injection pump

I got oil catch can and filter so combustion gases wont do that.

About month ago i cleaned torque sleeve piston and turned smoke screw back. Now consumption is 9.5l /100km 30mpg uk.

No matter city or highway flatout.

It wont give black smoke at all. We have smoke test in yearly mot. 2.5 is limit and allows visible smoke on exhaust. I got 0.01.

Still there is liter too much. Runs and pulls very well!
