motor / engine compatibility

Postby erposti » Mon Mar 14, 2022 2:57 pm

Hi there,
I am new to the forum and this is my first entry.
I have a Ford Transit C-1086 2.5 D van purchased in 1998.
Unfortunately the engine has died. It is a type D / 4FD engine.
Finding the same type of engine is practically impossible, but in scrapyards near my city I can find second-hand ford transit 2.5 D engines but of the 4FB or 4HC type.
My question is: Can I mount a 4FB or a 4HC to replace my 4FD engine? Is there compatibility or will the mechanic have problems?
When I see the motors from the outside, they look almost the same, but I don't know if they are really compatible because I'm not a mechanic.
If they were compatible motors, which one do you recommend? 4FB or 4HC?
Thanks in advance.
This is my first post, if I've made any mistakes, I apologize.
I've had my broken down van for 3 weeks, I really need it and I'm desperate.
I hope you can help me.

All the best.

a 2.5Di is a 2.5Di...

If you can get an engine from 1997 onwards it will fit straight in with no bother (do you have a factory immobiliser? Theres a red bit on the key, and an LED in the dash/roof if so)

If you get a 1991 onwards engine, it will fit with no problem, but there are some parts which will need to be swapped from the old to the new.

Thank you very much really
Now I know that I can buy the 4HC engine and install it in my van with no problem. Luckily it doesn't have the immobilizer.
3 weeks without knowing the correct answer and in this forum I get it in 3 hours.
