Love my old Nugget, but..

Postby Bakas » Tue Apr 26, 2022 9:37 pm

But its getting really hard to source parts for an 1987 Transit and its tiresome on a long trip.

But I love the layout, westfalia roof and the size of it.

So it got me thinking, how hard would it be to swap the drive train (engine, gearbox, axle) from a never, more powerful transit? I want to be able to cruise at 120kmh without worrying that my gearbox is gonna blow up (happened last week)

Someone put in a turbo and intercooler in mine, so it can go, but not without consequences..

Let me know your thoughts, SLAVA UKRAINE

I've got a couple of options here I'm wanting to try with mine.

I've.got an m57n engine from a BMW.
And a 2.5tdi engine from a ford ranger.

Both of these engines will power the transit with more power than they could ever use..

But obviously they need work to install.

2.5TDI sounds like the way to go. My worry is that you basically need to change everything, including suspension to be able to deal with the extra power. Mine doesnt handle great when going 80kmh, at 120 its like living on a prayer.

I really like westfalia design and shell. The pop up roof. Ive looked at the newer vans but just cant find something that would be just as compact and well designed inside..

If you put a later mk4 or mk5 axle on, it makes it far more stable (because its a wider axle)...

You will need to cut the damper mounts off and move them to the same place as your axle though

So if I take an engine, gear box, drive shaft and rear axle from say MK5 it will all fit here without a major reconstruction? Has it been done before? Is there a thread? How about leaf springs in the back?

Please tell me more!
