Smoke and smell increased after replacing fuel pump

Postby Ashgard » Tue Jun 14, 2022 9:27 am

Hi all

Last year I've replaced the electric fuel pump of my MK5 (Transit 2.5 Di Turbo, Bus, Diesel, 2.496cc, 63kW, RWD, april 1998) by a mechanical one. The electric pump broke for the 2nd time and I didn't want to spent more time/money on fixing it knowing it will break soon again.

In general I'm pretty satisfied with the result. The van is driving smooth and it has slightly but noticeable more power. But there is one drawback: it's a lot more smelly and smokey now. Especially when I start the van a big plume of black smoke leaves the exhaust. The smell is pretty diesel-ish. I feel ashamed when I start the van (especially on the campground) and drive away or when I have to wait a little while with the motor running or when someone is driving behind me (I've been there and it's not a pleasure to be there).

The mechanic of my garage tells me there is not much he can do about it. According to him it's because of the turbo. He can reduce the turbo, but that will result in significant power loss.

I know more people on this forum performed a similar replacement. I'm wondering if you experience similar issues? Or if someone has advice on what I can try to do? All help is appreciated ;)

Thanks
Ashgard

You can try and wind the fueling screws back a bit and see if that helps.

The reverse of what it says here.

Because the bosch pump has no boost compensation, it needs more fuel than is ideal at low revs to match the higher revs.

You can get rid of the smoke by reducing the power (turn the fuel screw back) but thats about all
