RECONDITIONING smiley engine has anyone done one??

Postby 97transit2.5D » Sun Aug 14, 2022 4:34 am

considering reconditioning my engine. mk5 1997 non turbo 2.5 with stuffed bottom bearing
(Year: 1997
Make: FORD
Model: TRANSIT
Colour: White
Submodel: 190 DIESEL LWB Custom high roof single tyre rear axle
VIN: SFALXXBDVLTE02811
HB series 76hp 56kW)

the worst case scenarios, according to my mechanic
1. that the conn (connection) rod is worn beyond tolerance
2. cam is too worn
3. STATE of, OR cracks in engine head? (but he said we would see water in engine)

is there a shop online or otherwise in some corner of our globe which still stocks the gasket kits, seals, valves, rockers, cams ?

not sure what state of the cylinder head is. and when we take it to bits what will we find??? WE MAY FIND A PERFECT ENGINE. LESS A BOTTOM END BEARING? its got 300K on clock, and worn cyl walls?

if you are willing to share where in UK, or WORLD these parts are found?
I imagine there are mechanics with whole sets of heads, rings, cams and gaskets just sitting these and prob brand new. have found camsahft seal, see below

looked on EBAY UK and most searches on NEW are nIL, and mk5 is no longer held new. (like on transitPUK )
I love my van and given the huge cost of other vans which are usually low roofs and the complexity of the diesel pumps in them, my vans is mostly all in great nick with minimal rust.
i love the mnual bosch pump as well. I can get lots of smileys for parts for all the other items. I have 3x MT75 gearboxes. but just this engine.
I have looked for second hand engines, but they are usually with BLOWBACK and or uneven compression and or higher kms and or all of the above and poorly maintained.

Maybe you have a 1km transit engine sitting in your garage that is fully reconditioned and you want to move it on. ??? lol

ALSO found motor doctor UK see below

thks

Rick

I’d be looking for a good running engine out of a rusted out van that you could have running first it would be cheaper then a full rebuild..

IMO wouldn't really be worth doing just find a good one there such a good engine there are load of good ones out there. the mk4 and mk5 it was almost always the body that let them down.

wow thks for all the replies.

yep i know that a second hand engine is the best idea, but i have had to get my mechanic to come and see all the ones i found
the latest was 170,000km and it was puffing like a dragon out of the filling hole, ie lots of blow back

will check the LD rotten bodies idea....

Stating which part of the world you are in might get suggestions of known good units in your area

The first di I rebuilt after it was run out of oil in a mk 2 it was just out of warranty and the machine shop ground the crankshaft to 2.4 York engine limits and the harding on a di doesn’t go as deep as a York engine and it lasted less then 3000 miles and knocked the big ends out again they ended up supplying a new crankshaft.
On a York I had a re bore and it had to be sleeved as it had a porous block on number one cylinder witch was only found when fitted in the van so sometimes you can still have problems even when you do a proper job by no fault of your own.
It’s not cheap rebuilding a engine it maybe worth searching for a running engine unless you really need the van back on the road quickly.

I have rebuilt several tractor engines and BMW petrol engines if the block and crankshaft are still in tolerances just doing rings and bearings all seals and gaskets will give you a good oil tight engine

Yes and if there is a slight lip on the block you can get a ring set with a top dodger ring so it doesn’t crack the top ring when it hits the lip .
