viscous fan mk5

Postby davetheshrew » Sun Sep 11, 2022 2:43 pm

Hi, Ive owned several mk5 transits and generaly Im very good at repairing them. Never in my time have I had a viscous fan bolt be as stuck as this one, I need help/advice please. Ive tried having a spanner on the pulley to go against the balancer, just pings off after so much torque and i dont want to damage the bolts any further. Tried mole grips on the pulley itself, no joy it just mangles the pulley, tried to put a scredwriver between the bolt head and balancer wheel, 3 bent screwdrivers later Im out of ideas.

If youve ever had this problem and solved it please pleeeease tell me what you did, I got a oil leak from the crank and need to get the viscous pulley off to get the oil cover off and change the seals asap because its getting really bad. Thanks

Also a small question, is the fan even needed? Should i just cut it off to the bolt and have done with it?

Its conventional thread.

Air chisel will take it off in seconds.

The other way is to unwind the pulley bolts slightly and make a spanner that holds those to stop it rotating as you undo the nut

I was really struggling with mine, but was able to use a "boa constrictor" rubber strap wrench directly on the pulley - surprisingly strong!: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOA-13-2612-St ... B00096JDKS
