Fan clutch Flange extraction [help!]

Postby Wipeout » Tue Oct 25, 2022 2:35 pm

Hello transit community, im trying to fix a 99 smiley from a friend, the fan clutch flange was holding the fan pulley with only two screws and it failed...(came like this from the sketchy seller..)

Now I want to take the fan clutch flange out (extract it, with bearing extractors) but im not being able to succeed.
This is the new flange I ordered:

And this is the one that should come off to let me put the new one:

So any opinion and procedure to take the flange will be more than welcome !
I tried to find any other post talking about this part but couldn't. I will appreciate as well if someone could share some posts in case they exists.

Thanks a lot!!

Description about the piece (from transit center):

The hub to which assembles visco of the radiator fan. Is pressed into a bearing which is located in the oil pump housing.
Flange viscose radiator fan fits Transit MK3 MK4 MK5 vintage produced from 1986 to 2000 engines 2.5 Diesel and the 2.5 Turbodiesel

Thanks thanks for any help!!

i would imagine you will have to remove the oil pump cover and press it off/on :? or try a bit of heat :?

Try a puller on it, or cut most of the way through it with a grinder then split the last bit with a cold chisel

Thanks for your comments guys !
So I tried a good puller from a friends garage and didn’t work out…tried the puller + heat, didn’t work out….

I also thought about cutting the flange in half, but considering that the new flange will need to be press (after knowing how tight the old one is…) I might just take the oil cover and take it to the press…

So to take the oil cover I need to take crankshaft pulley ? What’s behind the cover ? I cannot find very clear diagrams about this area…
Thanks again !!!

Im gonna answer to my own question...because I realised after doing a research that im gonna need to take the crankshaft pulley...

So the new question...is this easy ? I guess blocking the cranck shaft with the 13mm drill and taking the nut out will be enough right ?

yes remove the pulley, behind the cover is the oil pump which you dont need to disturb

Yes ! I ordered it already with the paper gasket that goes with the cover...thanks anyways for the advice. Tomorrow im gonna start the job, I hope the crankshaft pulley comes out easy, as well the crankshaft sprocket...Any recommendations around this ?? (Im gonna mark everything as much as possible to put everything back in the same place..)

Update:
Managed to take old flange out, with an improvised "extractor" made with one nut (size of the fan nut, screwed in the threaded part of the flange) welded to another nut. Then with a bolt we could push out the old flange... :)
Finally we pressed in the new flange, now im waiting for the oil pump cover paper gasket and front camshaft seal.
(I needed to order them in the official ford shop, spent like 50eur for both original parts...)
For this 99' 2.5DI smiley the parts number were:
-1077534 gasket
-1539755 seal

Hope one day this post might help someone else.

Thanks for the comments :D and yes here in south Portugal everything tends to be a bit "farmer style" :P

I have a comment to say and hope someone can give me an advice or link to a related post (couldnt find it myself):

Since im gonna put back the timing belt, I was thinking if I could adjust a bit the fuel pump timing...This smiley ,at the first start of the day, likes to shake a bit, throw some white/blueish smoke for 3 minutes approx and then normalizes her idling...
You think adjusting a bit pump timing will have an effect ?

Thanks as always !! Always so appreciative to this forum!!
