Mk5 engine swap - immobiliser requirements

Postby nigelwheeler » Fri Nov 04, 2022 3:28 pm

I'm hoping to swap engines (2.5 DI) on my mk5 1998 for one slightly newer (99/00).

I'm assuming the donor will have a red chip immobiliser like mine.

What do I need from the donor to make sure it runs, or what's the best way to go about it? E.g. swap from old pump, attach key to pump, remove immobiliser parts, take the ECU, change over the locket etc etc...

Are they both N/A (non-turbo) engines with Bosch pumps :?:

Both non turbo, haven't seen the donor yet but assuming it's the Bosch because of year.
Just been told though that apparently the immobiliser has been removed/bypassed from the pump, so hopefully looks like there won't be a problem (apart from the lack of immobiliser!)

If you use your original pump, or just swap over the RIM module from the back of your pump to the new one, then you'll still have your immobiliser and original key.

The donor had already had the module on the pump bypassed because the original owner had lost the key.

However, I'm not getting 12v down the ignition wire to the starter solenoid when using my original key and loom, so now not sure if that is immobiliser related or just a general electrical fault or fuse or something.

Is there a starter fuse on these?

UPDATE - starts fine when bypassing the ignition barrel (12v to solenoid direct) and there is a pattern on the immobiliser LED when turning ignition on - a solid light for a couple of seconds followed by fast flashing.
So I guess that because the donor didn't have a key and was being hotwired to start, the single wire to the pump supplying 12v was sufficient for engine to run, but no signal is being returned to disable the immobiliser restriction to the ignition switch.
Swapping pump module is probably the best long term solution, and I'm sure answers are on this forum somewhere, but any other suggestions for quick workarounds to disable the immobiliser and allow key starting would be very welcome...

if it starts when solenoid gets 12v direct then have a look through this thread it may have some info to help you about immobiliser/starter fuses/relays etc
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=211437
and the immobiliser light should stop flashing fast after a minute then start blinking a code
