1998 Transit Torque.

Postby Heathen » Fri Dec 09, 2022 9:29 am

I've read the old posts of "add a turbo"..."if you wanted more power, you should've bought the turbo version" etc etc.

My faithful old Chugsy (2.5di) has always been a Slug, but a steady and reliable one. I've shifted a lot of mass with it.

However, I tried towing a box trailer the other week and it was like I was in slow motion.

The van was empty, and so was the trailer. I can't imagine what it would've been like with a load.

What are some simple ways to get just that bit more torque from the engine?

Exhaust? Tune? Ignition?

Check the torque sleeve first

Then wind the pump up a bit

Brakes weren't sticking on, on the trailer?

Besides the good tips above from keef, you can also wind in the max fuel screw on the back of the pump for more go.

Thanks very much for the Torque Sleeve suggestion - I'd never even heard of it.

I've already wound the pump up 1 1/2 turns. I'll do the above clean, then maybe try another half turn.

Had the problem of running out of power on hills and felt like it was not getting enough fuel. Tried a new fuel filter but no different. Took the four screws out of the top cover and removed the spring, tapered piston and shims. Then I removed the three cap screws and took out the torque tube but what I then found was a pin lying loose in the bottom. I suppose this the guide pin but how does it fit. It is too fat to fit the hole in the bottom of the piston but it fits into the hole in the bottom of the chamber, however it does not go in far enough. If I try to build it back together like this the piston doesn't go far enough into the torque tube.
Can anyone help with this or is there an exploded diagram of this pump anywhere so I can try to suss it out.

Thanks

Thanks for the diagram Noctule but unfortunately the torque housing is different from mine. Although they look the same externally mine doesn't have the rubber diaphram and star wheel.
For clarity I have a 1994 2.5 non turbo banana engine mated to an auto box so can't afford to lose any power

it will be the pin labelled B in Mat's diagram above, its moved by the torque piston and acts on the governor.

It was just a sample diagram that I found. The diaphram is probably for a 'turbo-top' version of the VE pump like those fitted to Landrovers, which gives a boost when accelerating, but otherwise will be similar.

Turns out the image is from injectorpumps.co.uk

Thanks Chug and Noctule for helping out. I was trying to put the pin in the wrong hole (stop sniggering) as I never noticed the hole in the side of the chamber.
It is all back together now but not road tested yet, however I am not confident this was my problem as I can't see how the pin could just fall out. I think I must have dislodged it when I pulled the piston out. Maybe have to look at a new lift pump now.

Thanks again

yeah it wouldn't come out on its own, but good it wasn't gummed up and stuck in.

Just to finish this thread off in case anyone else has similar problems.
The van had a lack of power and struggled climbing hills and could not hold much more than 50mph on motorways though it was fine around town.
I changed the fuel filter, air filter, removed the top off the injector pump and checked the torque tube and piston, changed the lift pump, blew out the fuel lines and dumped out the diesel and refilled with fresh stuff. All this made no difference so I bit the bullet and took it to a diesel injection specialist.
The problem was with the cam plate inside the pump which had worn down and the case hardening had gone. This is on an engine that has only done 47,000 miles (genuine) and the engineer says he has never seen anything like it at this mileage as the rest of the pump was in excellent condition.
My pocket is a bit lighter but the van is pulling like a train so I am a happy camper once again.
