Preheating and instrument cluster removing

Postby Sinisha » Mon Dec 19, 2022 3:01 pm

Hi
I am a brand new Transit owner. Camper on Mk4 TDI. The instrument lighting is barely visible so I want to check the bulbs. Can anyone help with instructions on how to remove the dash? Below what temperature does preheating kick in?

It's easier if you take the steering wheel off, but it can be done with it in situ.
Look up at the clocks from under the steering wheel and you will see two screws in the trim surrounding the binnacle, remove them and pull out the trim, then you remove the four screws and the binnacle will come out, but you'll need to reach up behind the dash to squeeze the retaining clip to remove the speedo cable first.

No preheating? Only Mk4? I heard something about that, but I figured that's some strange option for certain markets .... :?
In Owner manual is stated that when engine is cold preheating may occur and lamp will lit. So, no problem when cold with these engines? My old Iveco has Thermostarter, flame torch in air inlet. Kicks in only when engine cold and outside temps are below 2C.
Is the lack of preheating the reason for the two batteries in some models? I have one battery, as usual. The place for the second one is occupied by a leisure battery.
So if my Transit has a preheater, then it's a Torch in air inlet, like my former Iveco?
Interesting ....

Good battery/batteries,good starter and good connections=vroom.

No need for the glow plugs with the MK3/4/5.

Only lipstick wearing Mk6/7 types need them.
