Mk5, 2.5TDI, Epic Pump Night mares.

Postby rick blue » Sat Jan 07, 2023 9:49 am

Hi All. Red engine light is on permanently. Van was running well (100,000K's on the clock) Replaced Timing belt 25,000K's ago. Pinned the engine, for the timing, with no problems till red light and LHM came into effect. Had it scanned by a qualified mechanic, pretty sure it was a Snap on scanner. These codes came up
P1644 - Fuel Pump Speed Control
P1189 - Pump Speed Signal Fault
P1190 - Calibration Resistor Out of Range
P0185 - FT Sensor (B) Circuit Fault
P1171 - Rotor Sensor fault
P1174 - Cam Sensor Fault
P1177 - Synchronisation Fault
I've read other threads, on this forum with similar problems which have been resolved by replacing the Epic pump with a Bosch. This is where I'm at now. Unfortunately my van has an automatic gearbox so a gearbox replacement would be needed. Surely I can have these faults wiped from the computer. I have double checked the timing but all seems good. I'm trusting the pinning of the valve and pump timing to be within the 2deg to 4deg range. My mechanic say's he can't wipe the codes off. I also check the Multiplug and socket behind the injector pump, regularly, It's dry and the wires seem tight and the pins clean. The van was never that quick but usable for what I need it for, I would like to get more power out of it doing an injector upgrade to 100PS as it is an 85PS at the moment. Pretty sure the vehicle was a 12 seater bus during it's life so could be speed governed also. Top speed 115Kph when it's running right.
I'm an ex Pom living in Perth West Australia. Not many transits here. Any information would be appreciated, Heelp :(

With all those codes I would check the wiring loom thoroughly from pump to edc.
there are some epic manuals here

The only scanner that’s compatible is the Lucas Laser 2000 I believe.

DCU, Diesel Control Unit. In this world of abbreviations, what does EDC stand for? There is nothing in the manuals that relate to this.
I have this sneaky feeling ,the EPIC set up is going to cost me a fortune and remain unreliable for the future. I'll check the wiring again as suggested, maybe tweak the timing pulley on the injector pump. I've checked e bay today for a Lucas Laser 2000 scanner. Expensive and no guarantee it can resolve this situation. I'm more a mechanical expert than electrical, Worked with petrol and diesel engines all my life. This thing of mine is heading for the too hard box. I'll price up a second hand gearbox and parts, a Bosch pump and parts and take it from there. 100,000 k's on the clock and I need to throw it away. Ford should be ashamed of themselves. Ahh well.
Thanks Chug

In the Ford Transit Epic manual (top link) its referred to as EDC, electronic diesel control, in the LDV Epic manual (bottom link) its DCU
Have you checked the EDC multiplug and connecting pins too?

Ahaaa, got you now. Yes, first thing I go to when the van plays up. Had some water in there in the past after torrential rains. No corrosion on the pins and sockets. Pins are not "backing off". I'll do a continuity test on wires, pins and sockets.

That is a typical set of codes for a pump thats been unplugged with the ignition on.

Snap on code readers can read the codes, but not clear them. They don't always give the correct description either.

I would start, as suggested by carefully inspecting the pins in both halves of the pump connector for any corrosion/damage or backing off.
