Just had a masterclass in how to remove the barrel of a mk5 non turbo ignition lock. Key wouldnt turn to position 2 to enable removal of lock barrel as described elsewhere.. The job needs 4 hands (2 people)
Remove 2 screws holding the plastic trim under the steering column and on screw holding plastic trim above the steering column.
Push a previously working key into the lock…. One person holds the steering wheel so the steering lock is in the loose position.. ie between hard left and hard right.. the other gets a metal hammer and tries to gently turn the key to position 2 whilst hitting the underside of the lock with a series of firm knocks.. usually this will allow the key to turn.. you are looking for position 2 NOT all the dash indicators on which is position 3.. then get a small allen key and depress the little button on the top of the lock.. this will allow you to remove the lock barrel. A competant locksmith can then reset the pinwheels and ensure that all keys work properly.
Voila..
