Recommendations please

Postby ColinJack » Fri Sep 01, 2023 3:52 pm

Looking for a recommendation for someone in Norfolk/Suffolk with facilities to replace king-pins in our Mk3 van.
Just failed MOT for too much play! Was fine last MOT - 2,500 miles ago. :x

I don’t have either the tools (reamer etc.) or experience to do it. Need an old hand pro with a decent garage, ideally reasonably local.

Any suggestions please?

You may know this already, but whenever my kingpin equipped vans were due for MOT, I used to fill them, immediately before, with the thickest grease that I could lay my hands on :)

When I did have to have them changed, it was always a massive problem getting anyone with the tools to do it :?

Yeah - I have got away with pumping full of grease for 10 years but suddenly got a picky MOT guy.
Need an old hand that knows how to do it and has the tools.

Trying to swing a BIG hammer in the wheel arch to tap the old ones out was always an issue

Done em on a MK2 and a MK3 many years ago.
One person heating with a torch and another bashing away.

Was it "play" or "lift" they got you on?

What did they actually fail it on was it lift or rock when I was presenting hgvs for test on some models if you removed the bushes in the stub axle they would still be within the limits to pass the test they used to fail easier on kingpin lift.there are different limits for kingpin’s based on wheel diameter.they may have failed it on just feel and not on the limit in the tester’s manual.
if it was mine I would show me on what limits they have failed it on.

For removing the kingpins as gotchman says that’s the way to get them out on my mk3 at home I used heat and a hydraulic bearing puller.

Play.
Nightmare ... I have a new set of QH but need someone to put them in without f* them up!
Every garage I have spoken to doesn't even understand what I'm talking about.
Some older owners have said dropping the axle out and doing them on the bench is the easiest.

Fitting the new bushes will need to be reamered if who fits them are not carful they could end up with more play then when you started when I did mine at home I didn’t have access to a reamer and had to take the stub axles to machine shop to get them done .

Take it back talk to the usual tester when he’s back off Hoiday.

Aww bu99er  Maybe he heard that you were coming back for a re-test  :P

I can remember taking my old Sherpa to 4 different testing stations to find a tester who knew what kingpins were, and understood that they all have a bit of play

Nasty business. His brother was killed in a bad smash whilst he was away and he came back and said he didn’t want anything to do with cars ever again. Horrible.
