Type 51A Halfshaft studs

Postby Mislaid » Mon Oct 30, 2023 7:53 pm

Online parts book suggested the studs were 3/8.
Can anyone confirm this is unf thread?

Thanks

Having now had a closer look, they appear to be more like 7/16 unf.
Don't have my thread pitch gauge to hand, but imperial thread on a vehicle that is all metric???

Type 51A is a six stud axle and doesn't have studs in the halfshaft.

The wheel studs are M16x1.5, and the bolts that hold the halfshaft to the hub are M10

If you have 5 stud axle the wheel studs are an M12 thread (1.5 pitch I think but don't quite me on it) - same as focus, mondeo etc

It is a single wheel 100L and halfshafts are held in place, on studs, by 6 locking nuts.
They take an 11/16 socket (suggests 7/16 correct) but i have misplaced my thread pitch gauge.
Yes i could count the threads but not lost the will to live just yet

Ahhh I'm assuming then you have a mk3? Those details are useful as that is an odd-ball axle.

11/16 socket is almost identical to 17mm though - which would be M10. However the parts list I have show the (flanged hex) nuts that hold the half-shaft in to be 7/16 UNF -part no 1568892, and the studs also to be 7/16 UNF, part no 1501446

Ah, in my mind's eye i stated it was a mk3 in thread title....
Threads looked unf but on a late 80's ford??? Thought only Austin Rover got up to those shenanigans
Yes interesting layout on this "oddball" axle
Very familiar with imperial tools and always hated those using metric as a make do, unless it was 19mm/ 3/4
