Welding advice please

Postby Sirius » Tue Jul 23, 2024 11:35 pm

Hi all, my mk5 transit has a totally rusted front driver side suspension mount, the box section. Is there a way i can purchase a replacement or would i need to fabricate this? If the latter can i get some advice on what thickness metal i should be using? Many thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion, I have been trying to figure how to upload a pic.. so this is the main part of welding i will need to do. Il get a proper look at it again on Friday and take some measurements, to identify a replacement or to make one up. Looks like the whole front driver side suspension is mounted to it, Im not sure what that cylindrical object purpose is yet but looks like its just hanging on!

If there where some technical drawings on this then that would be great. Il continue to search the forum in the meantime.

Any suggestions welcome, many thanks :!:

Thats called a front spring hanger and they are available.

There are 2 types which are listed for all mk3/4/5 - but in reality mk3 is different from mk4&5.

You need the type without a return flange on the top surface
Lucas Laser 2000 & IDS
95 M Prototype/Mule DRW 100PS Highcube
95 N Hallmark (white)
96 P 150 TD 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 P Autosleeper Duetto
2 x 2006 Mk7s

Gaffa tape is like the force, it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together

Was going to say that the circled bit is replaceable.
Matt has mentioned the one you need.

The other bits roughly arrowed are weldable.

Dare I say "I've seen worse"

Thank you very much for your replies.. it was helpful to know the name of this part, im going to order one, but first im going to try figure what else i need, maybe that suspension component that fits through of it? Iv been looking for a manual to learn more with not much luck so far online. Theres a haynes on ebay il buy unless anyone has any links to a manual? My apologies if its on this forum somewhere, I have searched.

Thanks for pointing out the welding and the part that can be replaced! Iv built up quite a bit of experience welding from owning another mk5, as you can imagine! But this front spring hanger look like it could be challenging .

Im going to take another look over this weekend and hopefully be in a more knowledgeable position to order some parts. Thank for all your help, its much appreciated!
