Mk5 Transit with 2.5 di turbo (recon) Black smoke help plz!

Postby soulysurfer » Wed Aug 21, 2024 6:00 pm

Hello All,

Been a while away from this forum, good to see it's still going strong! :)

I still have my trusty mk5 smiley, and managed to fit a reconditioned 2.5 banana (without the banana manifold) turbo engine into it. It's served me well over the past few years, but now it's just too smoky... black smoke!! So much that it won't pass its MOT. The engine was modded by a professional to get to work in my van, which included overriding immobiliser, blanking off the EGR, disabling a few of the butterfly valves and routing some of the pipes. All the obvious stuff has been done - air filter, fuel filter, checking the inlet manifold (oily inside - but generally not coked up).. I'm a bit reluctant to add any additive to the fuel. I know black smoke is a fueling issue, so perhaps not enough air...or too much fuel (maybe fuel pump needs adjusting).... or perhaps a problem with the turbo?

It does seem to be a bit low on power these days compared to what it used to be when the recon engine was first fitted (which ran like a dream with little smoke for ages)... I have worked the van REALLY hard over the past few years, so I dunno yea, maybe I've worn something out. Ive heard splits in the pipes can be a problem, so going to check that next. Or I was wondering if a problem with injectors (which were all new when fitting the recon engine)

any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

many thanks :)

I'm no expert on turbo DIs and I'm no mechanic but just some random thoughts:

If there are rubber hoses on the boost side of the turbo and one of those has a split, that could cause smoke due to over-fueling/lack of boost pressure. I suspect that would be most pronounced under load.

I'm a bit concerned when you say there is oil in the inlet manifold. I guess you could get some from the crank case breather but I wouldn't expect loads. Personally I would expect the inlet manifold to be fairly clean and dry - particularly as you have the EGR blanked. If you can get to the boost side of the turbo, I'd check there for oil leaks, if the turbo is failing and it lets go it could cause all sorts of damage.

If it's running generally smooth, just under powered and smokey, I'd be less inclined to suspect injectors. That said, keep an eye on oil level, if it starts going up, you may have a failing injector.

Good luck with it!

Thanks for this reply and your time writing it, very much appreciated! Yes so the inlet was fairly clean... a little oil. The turbo is very oily and I expect leaking slightly.. it's the mechanical version with no intercooler, so I was wondering if it could be that. Could this be causing excess smoke? there is no smoke when idling, or with steady revs... it only seems to happen when I put my foot down or change gear. Perhaps changing the turbo would be an option? The mechanic didn't seem to be too concerned about the turbo, and said he thought it was unlikely to be causing the issue... he was slightly worried that it could be the piston rings :S

Have you changed the cambelt or anything similar?

Turbo inlet tracks ALWAYS have an oily coating - thats normal. If its dripping out its not.

also, the turbo is dropping oil around the body of the turbo itself, which I guess can't be good.
