Pinto carburettor and fuel gauge issues?

Postby Logswede » Fri Sep 06, 2024 6:31 pm

Hi all
New member here from Sweden. I recently bought a 1986 Transit pickup with a 10' aluminium bed, intended to haul logs and lumber to and from my little sawmill. It's fully driveable, however there are a couple of things i would like to adress on it. I believe it has a 2.0 pinto petrol engine, and the carburetor is rubbish on it. It cuts out a little now and then while you are driving, and the idle is very rough. So i am wondering if anyone could tell me if those carburetors are rebuildable or if i can find a new carburetor for it? The other thing is the petrol gauge doesn't work, i believe it's the sending unit in the tank that needs replacing. Does anyone here know where i could find a new sending unit for the tank? All help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No, you're in the right place, you just need someone with the correct knowledge to read, and answer. Sadly, there are few active Mk3 owners on here these days, and fewer still with petrol engines.

If it has the Ford VV carburettor it’s worth changing the diaphragm the main and the accelerate pump one back in the day the automatic chock used give problems we used to fit a manual conversion kit on any that doesn’t have one

I forgot the proper name for it but on the fuel injection engines on the right hand side of the inlet manifold there is a electrical valve that used to get gummed up we used to remove it and clean it out with forty fuel cleaner and put the rest of it in the tank also has the fuel filter been replaced recently.

The last Pinto with a carburettor that I had, was a Cortina Mk3, and that had a Weber carburettor (was it a 40 DCOE?), so other carbs can be fitted.

That must have been a flyer Al if it had a 40 side draft usually they had a twin set more likely to be 20/36 twin chock down draft a good replacement for the VV

It was a standard carb on a 2000E, so maybe I'm remembering something from the fast car magazines, and not reality :P

As above 8) , or fit a weber converion, IF you can find one? VV carbs are great when they work but the rarely do by this age
on the EFi pinto it's the ISCV or idle solenoid control valve  did they ever do a pinto EFi transit? i know they used the twink on smilies ?

Hi all
And thank you for the help sofar! The carb on mine is indeed a VV, and i have managed to find and order a rebuild kit for it. So, we shall see how that works out. A replacement Weber carb with all that's needed for installation is also available, but for stupid money, so that's not an option. The thing i can't seem to find is the sending unit in the fuel tank, any thoughts on that from someone here? And again, thanks for your input!

to test the guage/sender you need to ground the sender wire, if the guage goes up then it's the sender ?

Since i have no clue about anything electrical, i asked someone who does, to take a look. And he said the gauge was working so probably the sending unit in the tank was the problem. He has helped me a number of times in the past, so i trust him completely. So now i just have to find one of those in-tank things..
