Are Ford Transits Reliable?

Postby HansHoppe » Wed May 28, 2025 2:28 am

Hi all!
I'm soon getting a van and I have had my eyes set on getting a Ford Transit (SWB High Top). However, I've recently spoken to a mechanic who suggested to not get a Transit as they are awfully unreliable and not worth the money. This was quite a shock to me as I've seen so many Transits I like the look of and have also seen YouTube videos of people travelling the world in them.
Has anyone got experience with Transits and if so would you agree or disagree?

All vehicles have issues if you don't look after them and if you are not mechanically inclined you are at the mercy of a mechanic. Personally I have had Transits for 45 years and have had no silly problems but I would not buy anything post 2000

I'm sort of with the above post, i have a 2007 that's on ni on 300K with no welding and on the origional engine and box, having said that it's an ex ambulance so has been serviced to an allmost religious level, the Mk3/4/5 were probably the most reliable vans i've ever owned over the last 40 odd years, i've serviced a few fleets of vans over the years and only owned transits as campers/recovery trucks and daily vehicals, "caveat", i'm deffinatly in the fan boy club, i named my son Ford so maybe i'm biased, maybe i'm appreciative

Yes agree with both comments I’ve had more problems with the mk8 then any previous ones the only thing that’s better is comfort driving and rust you don’t get doors and bonnets rusting out after 4 or 5 years
