automatic gearbox isues

Postby nigelbonl1 » Thu Jun 05, 2025 8:43 pm

hi new to the forum,i have a 1998 ford transit mrk5 automatic auto sleeper had problems with the epic injection pump,so i replaced it with a bosch manual one,all went well but the problem is now is that the automatic gearbox is not changing gear properly or smoothly,i have been told i need to fit a throttle position sensor and possible load sensor, and wire it in to the ecu.how do i know if i have a electronic gearbox and does the wiring go to the engine ecu or the gearbox ecu, also my throttle pedal has been changed to a manual one, can i use the fly by wire one as it already has a sensor fitted on it,any help is appreciated.

I have no experience of this and the general advice on here is you can't fit a bosch pump to an automatic transit because the ecu relies on info from the lucas for gear changes so I think you are in unchartered territory here, but maybe minormatt might know more.
The bosch pump uses a mechanical cable throttle thus the pedal change, you could maybe try and graft a pedal out of the two using the fly by wire on top of the cable mechanism one or somehow?

hi that is what i am thinking,i have been told it can be done, apparently you need to connect a throttle position sensor to the pump body and maybe a load sensor to the pedal but on the fly by wire ,pedal i am sure there is already a couple of sensors on the assembly.with the adapted pedal and the wires connected back up maybe it will work i need to know if anyone on this forum has over come this issue.

Hi

The EPIC ECU controls the gearbox, and without the pump you have disabled it.

There are 4 options

Refit the EPIC Pump
Fit a Manual Gearbox
Find and Fit a 1988-1994 Non ECU controlled automatic
Live with it as is.

You will not get the existing gearbox to work without EPIC. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Nobody (that I am aware of) has got the ECU controlled gearbox to work properly with a manual injection pump
