Fuel filter never fully seals

Postby meerkatmag » Mon Jul 28, 2025 12:27 pm

I have a mk3 with the original fuel filter assembly with manual lift pump on the top that you can pump. The way ive been installing filters is to fully loosen the bracket, push the filter up as hard as I can and then tighten bracket down. If I don't push upwards really hard it just leaks massively. However even pushing it up as hard as I can it doesn't make a perfect seal. It drips diesel down the side very slightly.

Am I missing something? Is it supposed to be installed a different way? Or was this style never designed for a lift pump and cant take any positive pressure?

Is it possible to fit a mk5 filter assembly? They seem to have a tightening ring. The connectors look totally different though .

I think there may be something wrong with my filter housing. I bodged it by sealing it with hylomar and it's now finally stopped leaking. I'm going to replace the whole assembly when im back in the UK. Anyone fitted a perkins 296 filter housing? Looks like a straight drop in and a much better locking system.

If you have a landrover friend then the lucas housing from the defenders is what I use and it takes the cheap Britpart spin on filters
