Noise similar to exhaust rattling

Postby Nic1234 » Mon Aug 04, 2025 1:19 pm

Is anyone able to recommend where I could take my Mk5 to have an assessment of noise I suspect may be the two piece Prop Shaft; possibly Centre Bearing/ Housing? Many Thanks in anticipation.

Giving your location might help with replies

Should be able to safely crawl under vehicle and view.
It will be pretty obvious if the centre bearing has given up.

Many thanks for replies. Sorry, of course I should have thought to give my location; Basildon. The Centre Bearing seems ok but I’m very amateur; there is some play and a “clunk” at the Diff and the van is Automatic.

My Mk4 auto motorhome had the same problems and I traced it to the cv coupling which is fitted to these old auto transits.
Could not find replacement on line but took it to my local driveline specialist who sized it up and got me a replacement next day.
Around £60 if I remember right.
Hope this helps

Many thanks Dochie, very helpful. I’m not familiar with Driveline but will search. Please excuse my ignorance but is the CV you refer to the joint between Prop and Diff?

No its in the middle of the propshaft next to the centre bearing.
It should be fairly obvious but if you dont see it maybe it was done away with for the Mk5.

Thank you Dochie, I can’t detect any problem with the CV but think it likely I will need a professional to check. You asked previously if the van is automatic. It is and I now learn that some models developed noise from the torque converter, is this what you were thinking and if so would you be concerned about any sort of catastrophic failure? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I could not feel any play in the cv joint when underneath it. I put the rear axle up on axle stands and got the wife to start it up and put it in drive then got her to power on and off while I was underneath it. That was definately where the noise was coming from so took it off and took it to the propshaft specialist and asked his opinion. He took one look at it and said it was bu**ered , sized it up and got me a new one next day. I fitted it and have had no more problems. I still have the old one on the bench and tend to think that if I greased it up it might still do the job, but then I'm a cheapskate.
