Mk4 to mk3 engine swap

Postby bigbeurky » Tue Oct 14, 2025 4:12 pm

Hi lads
I have a 1992 mk4 turbo ( with a Bosch injection pump) van. I use it as a camper van, but MOT is getting more and more difficult, mostly because of rust. I found a mk3 camper van, bigger, from 1988 that looks really clean, no rust and defaults on the vehicle side. The engine itself has a few issues...
Has anyone ever tried an engine swap from mk4 to mk3 ? It would imply changing all the engine and probably gear box as well to be sure. I can't see any major issues, but it'd be best to have enlightenment from transit pros before finding out it's impossible and having no van instead of 2....

With you having the Bosch pump and not the epic it should be a straight swap just change things like the exhaust and you could use the box of the mk3 depending on if it’s the MT 75 it would be a stronger then the older 5 speed / 4 speed with or without overdrive if you need to change to a mt75 from the earlier box you will probably have to modify the gearbox tunnel.
Having both vans you have all the parts you need it’s all doable back in the day it was common to see the gearbox tunnel cut out of vans in the breaker yards to fit 5 speed boxes

Thanks !
Looks a bit of a hassle to cut away the gearbox tunnel, I'll check to see if it's a mt75 on the older van..

Yes agree but if it’s not a mt75 and got a the older 5 speed or O/D box and it was good I’d use that but I’d keep your old box and all the parts you would need to fit the MT 75 at a later date if you needed a new box

Yeah I'd do this too as well if I were you.
I am planning to swap the 2L Pinto and Type 9 box in my Ex-BBC Mk3 for a 2.5 Turbo DI and MT75 at some point in the new year and already have the floor section from a Mk5 to weld in etc. :D

If both cars have the same engine mounts to the frame and transmission, such as cast iron, then the engine replacement will be straightforward. If the '92 car uses aluminum, which is unlikely, then you need to use the mounts from the body that will be receiving the new engine. All mounting holes in engine blocks from '86 to '00 are identical and positioned in the same way.

I would do what ever needed to put in the mt75 I had a mk3 motor home with the other 5 speed gearbox and a previous owner had spent over $6000 on a rebuild and had done less than 100k km no drain plug and not as nice a gearbox to use

So with the Bosch pump setup, would this be a straight swap if I just sort things like the exhaust?
And if I switch to an MT75 gearbox, how much modification to the tunnel is usually needed, or is it manageable using parts from a donor van?

Not done the Bosch conversion myself but do search on here loads on the subject when they cut the tunnel they took a lot don’t know how much they actually used as for mine I went for the overdrive box
