Axles and mt75 gearboxes

Postby Hellblazzer » Sat Apr 18, 2026 12:37 pm

Hi all!

I've been trying to investigate a lot, about how to improve my highway comfort (I currently have a banana engine + mt75 + 4,56 english axle) in my mk3 100L 5 studded.
I know there are other kinds of axles, the german style, but they are nowhere to be found (and I've searched through tons of Spanish scrapyards, there really are some huge ones, aside from the ones here in Portugal). Almost every mk3/4/5 have the same setup as mine, or worse (5,14 etc).

I'll keep on looking for a 4,11 setup for my axle, since I've lost faith on the 3,91...

Aside from that, I've got to the knowledge that there are different mt75 gearboxes.

Does anyone know the Ford/finis references to them? How can I know if I have one or another just by looking at them?

C8 - MT75 5 Speed Close ratio (3.89)
W8 - MT75 5 Speed Wide ratio (4.17)
E8 - MT75 5 Speed Close ratio (3.61)

Does anyone have tips on the rear axles? Like what crown and pinion sets would I be able to adapt, aside from the 4,11 used on mk5 turbos, for example.

On what kind of transits was the german type axle used?

What would I need to to if adapting a mk6 rear axle? Would it be wider, so the mk3 look with the wheels inside the arches would be gone? What would I need to do with the propshaft?

Thank You in advance.

If your 4.56 is good condition that’s the favour Axel for most people it’s a good all-round ratio im not sure but I think that they all have the same 5th gear ratio

It's in good condition, but I'd like to lower the engine's rpm for highway use with less noise.

4.56 was a great all round axle on my Mk5, it wouldn't really have had enough power for the 4.11 without more gear changing, but could be an option if you could fit a turbo to yours.

As said, all of the MT75 boxes have the same 5th gear ratio :)

Why the different mt75 codes then? Is it just for 1st gear?

Thanks!

Hi,

i have tried the 4.56, 4.11 and 3.54 out of a zephyr. as i wanted the 2.5di non turbo to stop screaming. mine doesn't get used for work so is not carrying massive loads etc. i dont think there is enough difference between 4.56 and 4.11 for me. however the 3.54 is perfect for what i use it for. ie shows with camping equipment and towing 800kg caravan. its noticeable when towing the caravan but isn't a struggle. the top speed doesn't change much but the ability to to get to 70mph and not have the engine scream is well worth it.

however.

my transit has dynamat everywhere. the most noticeable difference was adding dynamat dynacore and dynamat hoodliner to the underside of the bonnet. and adding a small square offcut of dynamat hoodliner to the bulkhead central behind engine. think the engine one possibly does the most. my transit is a mk2 for reference.

its still not quiet as such but you dont have to shout having a conversation!!!

Hi and thanks!

I've removed the dashboard and applied 2mm butyl insulation + 10mm closed cell foam from the windscreen to the floor. Also got some buttl leftovers on the hood. It' helped a bit, but not much. I plan on applying to the rest of rhe floor and sides, at least the butyl stuff.

What's that on the 3,54 zephyr? How did You manage that?
Have You swapped a full axle? You mean zephyr as the Ford Zephyr, the sedan that went until 1962?

i have only ever used dynamat, its expensive but i think worth it. i have done a defender and the transit and it does make a huge difference. i think as i say the biggest improvement was in the engine bay though on the transit. on the defender i think the improvement come from under the seats and transmission area.

diff i got lucky. i waited and watched on eBay and when one finally come up i got it. i only got the diff and it fits into the axle for the mk1, mk2 and mk3. i dont think there are many around so you may have to search for a while. believe it has to be an early one but im not 100 percent sure.

Hello!
Thank You once again for the info.

Did You also apply the sound insulation on the engine side? I just applied "behind the dashboard". Surely it's even better when double sided.

Well, that diff is probably a real rare piece. It seems to me that it's going to be almost impossible to get one here in Portugal, but I'll keep looking

Mine was dynamat on the inside of the bulkhead and then some of the dnyamat headliner on the engine side literally a square piece stuck behind the engine as i didn't want to see too much of it.

regards diff it is rare and probably took me a year or two of constant looking.
