1997 Transit MK5 Heater Motor Question

Postby savi18 » Fri Jun 26, 2026 3:21 am

Heater motor stopped working yesterday, doesn't work on any speed, has power going to 3 speed switch/fan resister and 12v going to motor, so suspect the motor itself has packed up, however the heater fan motor has a green relay attached to it which is held on by a clip, when i disconnected the 3 pin plug and reconnect i could here a small whirling noise for a second or so from around the glove box area, don't think this relay has anything to do with heater motor or does it, no clicking noise from it when ign switched on, like i say power going to the 2 pin plug heater motor, anything else i can check, Cheers
Ps: No mention of Heater Motor Relay in fuse box/relay diagrams plus all fuses ok.

With you hearing a noise , perhaps the fans bearing has gone dry of lubrication, stalled and the fan (buzzing) then needs a push to start it ..If it will start that way .. then you need to lube it or buy new fan .. sorry don't know about the relay.. cant you bypass that and put 12 volts to the motor somehow. just to see if you can get it working and prove what's going wrong.

Update: Still not sorted this, however jumped in Transit last when it was dark started engine thought just try heater and when turned to either 1,2 or 3 the heater switch panel light lit up, no other lights, and then when switched on Main lights on the heater switch panel light went out and main lights were all fine, switch lights off and heater panel again lit up, any ideas please.

you need to check all the grounds in the cabin near the dash and battery connectors and terminals

take them off wire brush - re-install
