Mk5 2.5di oil leak

Postby Rustbucket96 » Tue Jun 30, 2026 8:43 am

Can anyone help I have a 99 mk5 2.5di which has a oil leak. At first my initial thought was the sump gasket had failed but after replacing this twice along with instant gasket the truck is still leaking but now seems to be coming from higher than the sump. Oil is dripping down the power steering bracket and also reaching nearside bottom arm and engine mount so could be spraying. Oil doesn't seem to be leaking when running but when shut off starts dripping allover. I have cleaned all engine off to try track the leak but unable to see a specific point. Any ideas on what to do next would be great.thanks

First double check that it is motor oil you’re leaking and not power steering oil. If motor oil is leaking then check if it is coming from:

1) the point where the dipstick holder meets the engine block, could be loose.
2) from behind the flywheel, there is an oil seal that can be worn and leaking or often installed incorrectly which damages the seal causing it to leak prematurely.
3) over tightening or uneven tightening of the sump tank can squeeze the gasket too much. Especially cheap cork gaskets. Check that you had a quality rubber gasket installed.
4) check that it’s not leaking from the valve cover. Also here over tightening or uneven tightening can cause leaking.

Probably best to start by washing it off

As v 184 said wash it off when clean you can use talcum powder on the oil leak starting at the top and moving down the block it slows the oil down and you should be able to see the area it’s coming from

Is the timing belt contaminated with oil ? (normally cam seal failure) looks like the sump gaskets been done (literally) best to superglue them to the sump rather than shucking sealer everywhere. stick a video up of it running
