My Rust Catalogue - Advice Please

Postby WildGoose » Sat Feb 23, 2008 4:42 pm

i'll let the pictures do the talking. I have been wanting to learn to weld, but was just wondering what I should be doing with this in the mean time? Do I poke it all through or leave it or wish brush it or what?

I've seen worst, but do Beevers have these panels to this extent?

Most importantly I assume this is an MOT fail?

Being an ex builders van, there is loads of soil/cement/crap in there as you can see, which is obviously holding moisture and accelerating all this rot. The shocker top on this side looks ok at the moment, only bits or surface rust breaking out

Hack all the rot away and weld new panels in.

If you wire brush it and then paint it the rust will just continue, rust wont sleep!

HI Wildgoose,
The rust damage in your photos is very similar to what I had.Im afraid I cant see it passing a MOT in that state. :( I bought myself a MIG welder a few years ago and its the best buy Ive ever made.My welding is not pretty but with some practice sessions you soon learn to weld to MOT standard.I made my own panals for my repairs to the sill and footwell, its more time consuming than difficult. If your MOT is pending soon it might be better to have the damage repaired for you this time, but do get a MIG, if I can weld anyone can. I got a handy little booklet for a few pounds from Halfords called 'MIG welding the plain and simple guide' by Chris Graham (Busby Press ISBN:0 9525039 0 5),its a great little book with a wealth of info and tips aimed at the beginner.
Regards Les.
