Postby smartie » Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:12 am

Tec quest..99 2.5Di VG with A4LDe auto gearbox. Can any one help!
Under medium load the overdrive slips, seams like the torque converter lockup clutch unlocks.

Did they know that they had to check/adjust the two bands as well :?:

Did they change the oil and filter and what type of ATF oil did they use :?:

If you haven't left it too late/allowed the box to slip continually  :(
You can do a modification that will cure your problem :!: :D

 Might be worth a go anyway :!:

The cure is so simple that Ford ought to be ashamed of themselves for not informing the very few automatic owners there are about it. (too late once it's burnt out  )

It'll be easier for you to understand, when you have the bits in your hand :!:

On the drivers side of the transmission, you will see two round, similar looking "plugs" :!:

Give this area a thorough clean, as you don't want to get any kind of dirt into the transmission :!: :!: :!:

Look carefully at the right hand one (the one closest to the engine) :!:
You will see a circular spring clip/circlip holding it in :!:
Using a small screwdriver, you can unlock it from it's groove (you may have to push the cover in, to assist you, as there is a spring pushing it outwards :!:

Once this is off, the cover may pop out with the servo and a coiled spring, or you may have to help it, by twisting it to help it pop out as the oil seal may be giving some resistance :!: (you'll know what I mean)

You will loose a little bit of oil at this stage :!:

Now simply fit the new servo and cover in it's place, not forgetting the spring and lubing up the seals with some transmission oil :!:
Refit circlip making sure it has seated fully :!:

Job done :!:

This new servo will give the extra pressure required to stop the slipping, providing that;
a) The band has been adjusted correctly :!:
b) The band hasn't worn out already :!:

Thank you for the info!
Our local ford dealer in Australia has not heard of FINIS CODE, he can not help with the parts that are required, is there some one in UK that I can aquire the parts.
I have spoken to two other Transit owners with auto box and they have been told by their Ford dealers to use their vans as cubby houses for the kids.

Does anyone know what year the auto box changed from A4LD to the “e” version A4LDe?

Just wondering, I have a 1996 Transit 150 Auto Turbo so just thinking ahead and wondering if mine will be the “e” version and could benefit from this servo modification.

Andyg, would there be any external way to tell if the servo mod has been done already just by close inspection.

The A4lde was fitted from late 1994 model year, also known as "Transit '95" and referred to on this forum and elsewhere as the "Smiley" or "MK5" :D

You can tell if you have the modified one on your transmission by the letters ZC stamped in the cover and you can see that the cover has a larger protruding diameter compared to the standard one, or compared to the 2nd gear servo :!:

When the weather improves, I'll get underneath and take a piccy or I might even just order another set and compare with the pair I've already removed :!:

Not that expensive from memory, so I'll post back on this with UK prices and picces :!:

I am Back!!!!
Thank you for your help!
I have made several enquires to Ford dealers about the FINIS code and the part numbers that you supplied, they have come to the conclusion that the numbers only apply to the UK.
Is there any parts suppliers in the UK that mail order via the internet?

How about the 97GT................ numbers :?:

The parts required are standard on the FORD EXPLORER 1992 TO 2000 and the FORD RANGER 2002 onwards if that's any help :?: :D

Now the weather has finally improved and we seem to have longer daylight :!: :D :D
Here are the differences between the two servo covers :!:

Image
As you can see by the arrows, the modified one has a broader flat shoulder :!: (compared)

And here's a photo or two of how it looks before fitting :!: :D

Note the letters ZC on the cover

 I might even consider this for the other band :o
