3-point belts in centre

Postby heraldcoupe » Wed Dec 14, 2005 11:54 am

My current Transit (1988 120 Popular) isn't expected to be with me for long (rust), I am already thinking about it's replacement. The current van has a lap belt for the central seat, is there a straightforward way of mounting a 3-point belt here? This van has a full bulkhead, with what appears to be a mounting point in the right place for the shoulder mounting. The bulkhead looks too flimsy to take the impact strain on a belt here, anyone know different?
If I can make the next van family friendly then no need for a modern car :D
Cheers,
Bill.

On the later models the three point center belt is built into the seat. The easiest way might be to replace the passenger seats with some from a newer van. I think they just bolt straight in. You could alway put them in the back of your new van when/if you get it.

Yup, like steve said getting seats from a later van with built in seatbelts is the answer. For compfort and looks I would do the driver's seat too. Keep an eye on ebay and your local scrappies.

Hi Steve,
I had a feeling they were seat mounted on the later vans, I've not really paid enough attention when I've previously hired Transits.
No seats in the back for me, the van has to work for a living. If I can get my wife and son in the front comfortably though it will save on having an unnecessary extra car,
Cheers,
Bill.

Fair enough. You shouldn't have any problem selling them on again though if they're in good condition.
