HI THERE FOLKS

HAVEN'T GOT A HAYNES MANUAL AND THE LOCAL LIBRARY CAN'T HELP EITHER BUT HAVE GOT A MAJOR FAULT WITH MY REVERSE LIGHTS THAT ARE NOT OPERATING AS ARE ALSO MY FUEL AND TEMP GAUGES

CHECKED ALL THE USUAL NOW WANT TO TRACE THE WIRES THROUGH TO IDENTIFY POSSIBLE FAULTS

IS THERE A SITE WHERE I CAN FIND A WIRE DIAGRAM ?

Welcome, Steve. As this is in Mk1 and Mk2, if it's a Mk2, you could have 2 seperate faults (for accuracy, i am talking Mk2 here, though the info would probably do for a Mk1.)

Firstly fuel and temp, did they go off at once, or seperately? If seperately, check the wire coming from the temp sender in the block (you don't say which engine, so that would help), it could just have fallen off or is broken up inside.
The temp gages don't often go wrong themselves, usually it's the wiring. the fuel gage is often the sender. Again it could be the wiring, but the bad news is tank senders (which operate the gage) are getting hard to find, and the Mk3 isn't a suitable replacement though it will fit into the tank.

As for the reversing lights, this could be the reversing light switch in the gearbox. Silly question, but have you checked the bulbs?

ive had em pass with no reverse lights and no fuel gauge mabe its dependant on the year

The reversing lights are a failure, if they are fitted they must work.

the reversing lights "should" fail the mot on two counts, one becasue if its fitted it should be working (only relates to certain things like lights) and because, i am assuming phase 2 here, the reversing lights are intergral and original fitment by the manufacturer so they should work

when you say you have tested the obvious, i take it you know the gauges and sensors are working then ?

i would also lean towards 2 seperate faults, maybe a voltage stabilser causing the gauges to fail (assuming they work) as for the reversing lights, once you know the switch in the gearbox is good then you are going about it the best way

not according to my mot tester my mk2 escort had em but they didnt work! he said it was fine!!

How can reversing lights fail, when they are not even tested!!

Same with the fuel/temp gauges, in fact even the speedo aint tested.

I've been doing M.O.T's for 8years now, if people have been failed on such things, the tester is doing his job wrong, and should be reported to VOSA

yes this is true when i got my mk1 there was no speedo drive in the box and in all the years i have had it ive put 0 miles on it!!!

Okay so I have put this on the wrong forum list so big apologies there but......................................

Many thanks for the replies the van is a 1993 model. Single wheel, high top, long wheel base.

I have a confession to make in as much that I have rewired a few bits - (like for like) after I had a wire burn out after it had worn through on top of the alternator which was after I had replaced the engine.

The faults with the reverse lights and the gauges was already there before though! I do think that a wire has burn out though somewhere. The gauges do work when I short ciruited them and the lights work when I use a battery on the wires at the light box end.

The reason for sorting this is that the only place where I can get it MOT'd is our local council depo who are pretty thorough and they will show the lights as a notification but not a failure.

I just like to get things like this working for an MOT. I also have an extra bank of lights that are useful for reversing into my drive as well as a bleeper - damned useful when trying to get through a bunch of ignorant pedestrians!!!

So any wire diagram would be really helpful.
