Opinion of a 150 Turbo diesel- 1998

Hello all!
We have just purchased a 1998 semi hi top,SWB 150 TD van, ex-enviromental agency and have very mixed feelings about it! It is in wonderful condition, with only 84,000m on the clock. Prior to this we had an E-reg 190 flatbed pickup, standard Di, which was run down to the ground because it was such a good ol workhorse!

Now with this new vehicle, we find it a very different beast to drive- in particular the throttle- or lack of a throttle cable to be more precise!! The pedal is horrible- just a small sensor on the end of it- no 'springyness' or resistance as you would get with a cable going to the pump. It is because of this lack of feeling, we find it so horrible to drive. Especially when taking off from standstill or changing gear- the engine is always reving when you dont want it to!! and you just end up spinning-or getting stuck!!

Having said that when you are up and running, it does pull well on the hills. You can stay in top gear for much longer than in a non T!! However sometimes it really does help an engine if you can rev as your changeing down a gear- but with this Lucas epic sysytem its not the same. Ive been told its quite possible to take off the electronic pump and substitute it for a manual (proper!) pump. The new pump would have to be altered inside to suit a TD engine and maybe differnt injector pipes fitted aswell. Is this a viable option? or am I opening a can of worms going down this route?

cant you just fit an extra spring on the throttle pedal to give it some feel :?:
would be an easier option than changing the pump!

The problem is you're used to the e reg acient thing. get used to driving this and you'll be fine.

Surely thousands of others don't have ths problem.

Yeah I know what you mean! :)
I don't really mind the throttle spring, I soon got used to that, but there is a big delay between moving the pedal and the engine reacting :?
It's particularly bad from idling, I'm always reving the engine by accident between gears and lifting the clutch before the enigne is up to speed. It was really quite annoying when I first got the van but I have to say I'm used to it now it's just a different way of driving 8)
