Clutch life test?

Is there any way of telling how much life is left in the clutch plate - without splitting the engine and box!

2.5Di and MT75 box sat on the floor now removed form van!!!

any measurements i can take or owt

If you take the gaurd plate off the bottom of the bell housing you should be able to see the clutch, if both sides look like they have plenty of meat and are equal then it should be ok, if one side is more worn than the other you may as well replace it while the eng/box is out cos its a lot easier than doing it with them in..


Cant say I know of any other way to tell.

If its out on the floor pull it apart ,its a lot easier than with the box in situ,its not a heavy gearbox and if your doing a rebuild it would give piece of mind to replace the whole assy!
A lot of Transit clutches I have replaced have been due to thrust bearing failure,but it must be said due to the ratchet adjustment it is difficult to ascertain clutch wear,and dont ignore the spigot shaft bearing in the crank,cause it can cause all sorts of grief and is a right bundle of fun to get out

i always use the grease method, never failed yet

I prefer a slide hammer if the bearing is still in place, 2 knocks and it's out.

much cleaner than that grease method too

Can't always get a slide hammer in there if you just slide the gearbox back!
