MK5 Chipped key

Need to buy new keys for spares etc but the red key didn't come with the van.Is there any way round it. I really don't want to buy another barrel set or pay my local ford dealer £65 for re chip + 18 per Key!!

The only thing I was thinking was just get a SET OF STANDARD keys cut and keep the chipped key in the van just for starting?

U might be thinking security and all that but the van is either gonna be kept in a locked compound or at a circuit, its not as if its gonna be left anywhere etc so the key can be well hid in the van

Tape the chipped key under the the steering column trim as close as you can to the ignition switch then you can use the key you have got cut to start and lock the van.The chipped key only sends a signal to the reciever which is fitted over the ignition

Or even beter just tape the chip to the reciever under the ignition couling, that way you haven't got to leave a key in the van!

Cheers guys. Ref the keys can i get them from any key cutter or will it after be ford? not bought a vehicle key for absolute years!

Any good key cutter/shoe repair man should be able to do the keys. Think I paid abit £8 last time I had some done.

I have a similar problem, the key with the chip has worn that much that you cant see grooves. I was quoted 50+vat for a new one. Yesterday I left the van running, and needed something out the back, which was locked. So I pulled the keys out the ignition, and the van still ran. The key is that worn that it came out at posn2 on the ignition.
How close does the chipped key have to be to ignition to work. I'm starting to suspect that the red key has been hidden already.

The van (pats system) only looks at the key for start up - thats why the van will keep running when the key came out - you can get keys from a lock smith that have a screw holding the case together-cut the case of your old key and place chip in new to new key

But that means he still only has one key! The idea is he wants spares! To get the chip out you don't need to cut the key just dig out the red or blue tap on top.
