T reg rear floor advice

Postby Bigredbus » Fri May 08, 2009 5:24 pm

Hi im in the middle of a project to move all my camper fixtures and fittings from a L reg van to a T reg van im changing the top tomorrow but anyway, today ive been stripping the ply paneling out of the t reg getting it ready, and when i took the wooden floor out ive found quite alot of rust on the rear floor section, my dad said patch it up but since ive been thinking would it be better to put a whole new rear floor panel in it because if it rusts again at a later date im going to have to strip all the fittings out.If i decide with your help that im going to put a new floor in where is the cheapest place i can buy one ive done a google search and found one £144 +vat i thought that was quite expensive i was thinking around £100 but i haven't really a clue as ive never bought anything like this so please can someone help thanks luke

i'm thinking about doing the whole floor on mine too , at least if you cut it out you can get to the chassis and sort that out at the same time imo . worth doing if your going to keep it.

Hi all, i had the same prob on my wreg, 1999, 80. Here a few pics of what i spent most of my weekend repairing :-(
I dont think its worth getting a new floor, get yourself a welder and some plate and have a go. i used a arc welder, but a mig would be best. This job cost me nothing, its not the best welding but it is solid!

I had a fair bit of rust on the floor and chassis of my L reg to do for the MOT. I ended op replacing most of the floor and as it was my own van and not a job for someone else I spent a lot of time on it to get everything right.

I would say replacing the hole floor would be much essayer and quicker as you may have to cut a few inches round the rust to find metal thick enough to get a good weld. You can still make a good job of it just plating where needed but you will probably find you need to do a lot more work than you first thought.

I would not attempt to use a stick welder on this kind of job, use mig with shielding gas, take your time with the preparation and finishing and it will last you for years.

Very funny you should bring this topic up as I have just pulled up the plywood from the ex-builders van I got.

Absolute shock horror or so I thought - It really isn't that bad! Not as bad as bigend09's!!!!!!!

A few plates and it should be sorted.

Hi glad to see your intersted in my post, the floor isn't done yet as i keep finding more rust it's really annoying, because its going to be a camper i dont want to miss anything as all the fixtures and fittings and would have to come out to repair at a later date.I have found on both sides just behind the rear wheel arch the chassis bits were rotten as was the inner tin piece behind the wheel arch,i didn't use the roof in the end i have just been welding in 1.2 mm tin with a mig but im getting on quite well trying to do 3 or 4 plates a day.The thing is i checked the van over when i bought it and it didn't seem to bad but the ply over the floor covers it and you cant really hit it with a hammer untill it's bought, but atleast ill know it's solid when ive finished ill try to add some photo's.When i started on it i was quite a novice welder but it's improving and im quite pleased now so i think theres one tip (want to learn welding buy a transit for pratice because im sure most are like mine) thanks luke

I needed to get mine on the road fast so went for the A team job, ive got sum box section to strengthen the back suspension supports up next. i use my van for towing so want it strong. The floor seems to rot around the chassie, i have noticed the van is alot quieter now its welded and boards screwed down good. i got an advisory notice with my mot to check out suspension mounts...
