Weird noise with engine not running!!

OK for a while now I intermitantly hear a weird noise from under the van with the engine off, it may happen when it'sd running but I don't hear it. It sounds like a pump or something and last for about 10 secs at a time. If it happens while i'm around the van I dive under it to see if I can find the source of the noise but i'm stumped!! It comes from somewhere near the petrol tank which made me think of some kind of pump, but why would it be pumping when the engines off?
It's a 1992 K reg SWB 120 Petrol

OK, so I was working on the interior today, heard the noise and dove under the van and it wasd this that was vibrating away!!, what is it and why is it doing anything with the ignition off?!

Is it a pump? Is it supposed to have something else connected to it? It only appears to have one pipe connected to it si it doesn't make sense to me what it does!!

I get the feeling no-one knows, I have never been near the tank on a DOHC engine but I would imagine that if it has no wires going to it then its a pressure maintainance valve of some description, similar to the ones Vauxhall Calibras/Vectras have, to keep the pressure at a certain level so the injectors will open on cranking..

Could be completely off target of course

If it is that then would the vibrating noise just be it releasing air? I've had another look and there definitely isn't any wiring connected to it just the one pipe.

It looks as if something should be attached on the bit on the right though. I'll have a look and see if the Cossie has got one as that has a tank from a DOHC van.

Yep it usually fires up straight away, every now and again it'll turn over for ages but usually it's OK.

I thought that perhaps the bit on the right looked like it was supposed to have something connected to it but i've been out again and had a look up it and there doesn't appear to be any type of connection receptor or owt, perhaps it's just the outlet for air then.

looks like the tank vent - they do make strange noises from time to time as they expell air (specially in hot weather)

That makes sense too, as i've noticed it more since the weathers been a bit hotter. I think I might attach a whistle to it for a laugh!!

cant remember does look like a bits missing and ive just binned my petrols tank - litereally 2 days ago but i thought the diesel tank had one too - i'll have a look see

Well if its a vent then thats really not fair....Mine hasnt got one! The first thing I did was go out and have a look.... I want one! You lot get all the best toys
