thermostart retrofit 2.5di 70ps

Postby kinty » Tue Dec 01, 2009 3:39 pm

hi to all the cold start sufferers, well im in that club now 2 seconds or so of engine cranking to fire up ...so ive been shopping, got some leak off piping,t piece, olives and a thermostart unit.fits in the 70 ps plugged inlet manifold..

mines a 97 70 p.s as above....these engines rely on slight advance of fuel pump internally at cranking speed ....NO COLD START DEVICE fitted, the point of this thread is to let you know how i get on and results as opposed to ,do the leak off/egr/fit two batteries threads etc etc.

basically i thinks its more or less what ford fitted as option ,ford decided its not cold enough here,i disagree and if it prolongs battery and starter motor life im up for it :D

watch this space... :)

it does have a cold start... its internal within the injection pump!

not according to bosch,if it was an early pump with an external linkage it does.on your theory its using excess fuel method,so how does it sense cold temps?

I have to be honest I dont know, but its not impossible is it? could be a waxstat type arrangement for example...

yeah youd think so,ive checked it out and apparently the only aid for starting warm or cold is an advance mech under cranking speed,

Hardly an improvement over earlier bosch pump with external cold start mech !
My mk 4 has no problems hot or cold,i remember this time of year for vans with newer pumps, loads of non-starters

The 1.8 diesels in the Mk4 escort dont have a cold start either, takes some working around and yes it's a stupid thing to do IMHO but that's Foed for ya, tighter than a nuns chuff

well, all fitted waiting for a really icy morning now ,as ive said van in summer fired instant,as it is, the van on cold days had to crank for a couple of seconds.....not bad (good as the mk5 di goes)but i like diesels to fire instant in all weathers...im running a one bosch battery(new for winter) and the small type starter.so bring on the sub zero, lol.ill get photos on shortly.

also fitted a throttle lock today ,fitted next to the thermostart button(where leccy mirror switch usually is)

ive used a thermostart unit(not ford) that matched the thread of the blank which is fitted to 70 and 76 p.s,as you can see mines a 70 .the coil is just a piece of copper pipe bent (stand pipe)which is merely t piced into return line and fed into the thermostart, the unit is supplied with 12 v via the push switch on dash ,which then glows inside manifold and allows diesel to seep through and burn which increases intake temp and enables a good sub zero start :D without fail.

if you have a diesel specialist near to you they will have the parts required for peanuts.

basically tell them you want a thermostart like "the old perkins etc"theyll know....same thread as the blank in your manifold.a foot of pipe and nut/olive to go onto unit,a tpiece and a foot of return hose.then fit a push type switch to dash and ,pos to one side, and other to the the spade on unit itself as pic.if you need any info give me a shout.
