Anyways to reduce mk5 noisyness?

Postby Carltina » Sat Dec 05, 2009 6:52 pm

Just bought ex cond T reg luton, no leaks, clean engine, loads history and MOTs but these engines are incredibly noisy. It has the factory insulation under bonnet etc but can this be added to or replaced with something better?
Took 6 months to find such a good van at £2000. (Wanted the much quieter more modern mk6 but these are much dearer as we all know).

I did the floor and halfway up the bulkhead inside (foil pads & felt), a little bit better, dash out job for the best effect

I have a MK5 luton and it is noisy... however stick some ear plugs in, turn the radio up & be happy that if you have found a good one
you have the last of the reliable & cheap to run transits...mine has been as cheap as chips for the last 6 years..

You will be glad you bought a mk5, they may be noisy but super reliable and if things go wrong easy to work on, although the later mk6 and 7's are quieter and quicker i have seen so many up for sale with blown engines

Cheers guys. Yes my mechanics say you can't go wrong with that engine but that the Duratorqs are very dear when they go wrong. In fact it's had so much money spent on it I doubt there's anything that could go wrong now except perhaps the cam belt which is the only thing I can't find in the extensive service history and that's probably only cos there are a few gaps in it. It's prob been done but I'll get one put in soon just in case.
I really don't like dronesome old four pot diesel sounds, bombproof though they may be. Thankfully the stereo goes up quite loud and the earplugs don't sound to mad either LOL
darkbluevanman Thanks, when you say the floor, you mean under the floor covering, under the vehicle or what? Yes I'd be willing to remove the dash to line that too.

I think the noise is all part of the proper van experience. My mate used to run a Vivario and when I went anywhere in it I found we'd arrive on site so relaxed all I wanted to do was go home to bed. My van makes me feel like I'm alive!!

Leave the engine off

A good service and pump timing check makes 'em noticably quieter.

arguing kids in the back are a good way of drowning out the noise from the engine but a good way of driving you totally insane in the process!!!!
