Electrical faults in P reg 190

Postby tranny mhan » Wed Dec 09, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi Guys

I have just bought a 190 minibus on a P plate 1997 model and I have a few electrical queries..

Firstly the tail lamps interior light and the dash back light dont work and I have checked the fuses and they appear to be OK..I have seen some posts on here regarding the stalks on the steering column and I am wondering if this could be the culprit...

Also the blower does not work on any setting and this is a pain as the weather is cold just now and any input would be appreciated.

Lastly I have to use easy start to get the van going in the morning and I think this is an electrical fault as well as the engine turns over freely and is not giving the usual signs of a knackered bettary or starter motor. My van has the bosch fuel pump and I have seen some posts on here regarding and internal heating mechanism and I was wondering if this is what is pumped...here are a few shots of my fuel pump for reference.

All advice is gratefully received....

I would investiage the wiring for the switch for the light problem

The blower - the switch and resistor is probably kippered although it could be the motor thats dead. Have you checked the fuse for it?

and it can't be an electrical problem if the van starts on easy start. If you dont know the history of the van I would start with a full service including fuel filter/oil etc...

TY for the reply Matt but there is a brand new air filter and diesel filter on the van and from some of the posts on here I am lead to believe there is some kind of heating device within the diesel pump bud.

That said the van is going for a full service including cambelt just for my peace of mind..

Again TY for your input

No heater in the later pumps, it just advances the timing a bit when its cold!

If the timing is out, or the oil is too thick they can be a right pain to start!

I would start with the switch, or take the radio out and see if there are volts on the motor connector.

The resistor only controls speed 1 and 2, it should be located near the driiver side headlight. The terminals often corrode off and leaves no connection

to give you an idea of what it looks like, heres a new one

The arrow on the fuel pump pic is the mid range fuel..looks like yours has been done going by the lack of tin cover. The cold start bit is internal of the pump.

Yes jay, the cap is missing from the top of the pump, so someone has adjusted the mid range fueling, perhaps the egr mod would improve things aswell, and turn the pump up until it starts smoking and then ease it back until it doesent smoke, at least now you dont have to mess around gettiing the cap off the top of the pump!

Right guys I have done all the suggestions on here so far and this van still wont play ball...She turns over quickly but wont start when cold.

A mate has told me that this may be a compression problem but there is no white or black smoke emissions that are normally associated with a worn out engine unit.

As said before the van starts with just a whiff of easy start and once cranked up starts no problem so this makes me think it aint compression as surly a knackered unit would be just as hard to start whether hot or cold and would be smokey to boot..Am I wrong?

That therefore only leaves me with a dead cold starting mechanism within the fuel pump...How is the cold starting mechanism controlled? Is there a relay on the van to control it as a wee yellow dash light appears for about a second when I go to start the vehicle?

All advice on this problem is appreciated.

It sounds like you may have a knackered fuel pump.....

However, I'm not an expert on diesel engines.

Is the waxoil thing on the top of the fuel pump the cold start mechanism? If it is not then what is? As something has to control this whether by electrical or mechanical means surly...

All advice appreciated guys

Do you know when the cambelt was last changed, 40,000 max, its possible it has jumped a tooth, it appears that you have covered all other bases so it could be down to timing ,sorry just read back and you said it was in for a servce and belt change, did that work ?
