Had this on my MK5 & it's a common problem. If you take the switch out you may well find the terminals burnt out on speeds 1 & 2. I bought a new switch for about £5 of ebay and fitted it. It's a bit fiddly getting in there but can be done without stripping too much of the dash. You may need to crimp new spades on the 2 terminals that are burnt out.

Pretty easy to pop the switch out & check the terminals. If that's not the problem then as minormatt says go looking for the resistor. Good luck.

You will find the reststor up under the dash fitted on the side of the matrix housing or thereabouts.

I doubt it will be the switch though...

As Matt says, it's most likely the resistor, only blowing on 3 is such a common indicator of a knackered resistor. If you do a search you will find a load of info on it 8)

The resistor is located just behind the O/S headlamp on the mk5 transit.

On the early ones yes, on the later ones it's as stated above.

Without wishing to sound bitchy.....

Why?

Look at the responses to your original post. How many people told you to change the resistor? How many of us also told you that it wouldn't be the switch at fault?

Mine does the same as everyone else's. I know its gonna be the resistor which is a pig to get at so I'm in no hurry to do it. I can't make up my mind whether its worth it, afterall it probably won't last very long anyway. Considering the vans only 11 years old I think its crap that this component should be so unreliable.
