Has anyong come across a pair of roof bars for a Mk 5, I will only be using these for transporting a kayak, which ways about 65lb. Cheers

Few different pairs available on eBay last time I looked.

If I were you, I'd steer wellllll clear of those full roof racks that are all one piece (like a big metal tray on the roof) as they weigh a ton and look silly

Or try a scrappy as there are lots of builders scrapping their knackered mk5's and buying almost knackered mk6's, so the racks are different and they don't think of selling them :lol:

i have just bougt a lwb high top and it has got a full roof rack on it. you are right they look silly and weigh too much. they also cause damage to the guttering. ebay?

(Hope it's ok to resurect an old thread but it seemed relevant )

Looking for a cheap pair of roof bars for my Mk5 SWB low roof to carry a surf board,
do I have to buy ones specific to the Mk5 or can I buy any low roof pair that are gutter fixing?

BTW It's an old BT van so it also has the bolts left in the roof

Have you thought about getting some roof rails (or whatever they are called) off an estate car or something and fitting to the Transit roof, so that you can fit the modern roof bars that dont involve clamping to and damaging the guttering of the van? I am thinking of this as a possible mod - might look quite smart too, although it might mean that I can't get under the height restriction things anymore, will have to have a measure up about that.

Whereabouts are you fella, got an ex BT ladder rack you can have for free if you come get it from Pompey Should line up with your roof holes just lovely.

Can dismantle it and courier to you for cost of courier and a pint or 2.

"Ladder rack" sounds a bit industrial, have you got a pic please ?

The silver rails are pretty firmly bolted to it, but I would guess so.

You're gonna find out one way or the other. You may need to fab some bracing brackets to bolt to the internal roof flange rail - the original set-up in mine had racking to fix back to, I'll see if I kept the ones it had, but not sure if I did.
