Whining noise above 38MPH

Postby crazystevie » Wed Dec 30, 2009 10:33 pm

Well to was the first time i have realy had a decent drive in my bus:
Its a 1998 transit tourneo (9 seats), 2.5 turbo.

Well it drives ok then as you acelerate away you get to 38mph and i start to get a whining noise as you go faster the noise gets louder,
Also when turning right i get a loud squeaking sound from the front left hand side, i am not sure if this is conected but the steering does not return to the centre position, i have already mentioned about the steering on here and i was advised to have the tracking done.
The mot expires in april however i was thinking of just taking it to a garage for a mot and see what they say, but if it was to fail that would then make it ilegal to drive, I wonderd what your thoughts are on this, apart from that it drives fine, good heaters very comfortable drives in a straight line brakes ok and all electrics seem ok, apart from the interiar light not working when the 2 front doors are open it works with the side door open also it works on the interiar switch.
I would just like to say this is a great forum i have already had some great help, i have also found some great info on how to do things. steve

As it gets worse when turning it sounds like it could be a wheel bearing.

I had a wheel bearing go a few weeks back on the front left wheel. Mine was noisy in a straight line and quiet when steering. An easy check would be to jack the wheel just off the floor and feel for any loose play in the bearing.

there should be a small amount of play when the bearing is cold, i think its a bout .004". if there is no play when cold it will get too tight when it warms up and damage the bearing.

Agh! The last thing you wanna do is move the MOT to the middle of WINTER. Mine's in March, wish it was in May!

True that, just got mine in the warmer months thankfully. Wheel bearings seem to be a worth doing maintainance job anyway and my steering don't return either, good for hands free turn in the road :D

Update: well i had in the garage to day and it is the wheel bearing on the rear off side, as its a rear wheel drive the mechanic said its a bigger job than if it was the front, he said he may have to get a special puller but he will phone and let me know, he said he has never known a rear wheel bearing to go on a transit before. so i bet this is going to cost me a fortune, when i bought the bus their was a box of bits in it and among them was a new wheel bearing that was lucky their is also some light units/new steering joints and a new shock.

Well i was talking to my mechanic to day, he said andrew page auto factors have said their is over 20 different rear wheel bearings for the transit, also it depends if its a diesel or petrol.
As my 1998 tourneo was a 2.0 petrol but is now a 2.5 diesel turbo, he is not sure if the rear axle was changed with the engine, so the plan now is to remove the bearing and he will take it to a local engineers for them to make one the same.

I would be interested to hear more:
Mine is a 1998 swb 5 stud, tourneo, do you have a part number etc, as my mechanic seems to be strugling with this one, i apreciate your help.

Get a new mechanik

Transit wheel bearings are a piece of pi55 to change

Also check NSF Bottom Ball-joint because if your steering is stiff it could collapse at anytime and is VERY DANGEROUS
