Drawing of a mk3 stub axle.

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find a drawing of the front stub axle from a mk3 Transit, specifically the taper of the axle itself.

Would anyone be able to help me out? Either with a dimensioned drawing ( ) or a lead on where I may be able to get hold of one!

Well, I'm building a kit car from my mates old dead mk3, the engine, gearbox and axle should work fine as they are, but the front suspension is a little more tricky. I need to use Cortina front uprights, but would like to keep the same wheel PCD front and back. I had a wacky idea of just swapping the Cortina hubs with the Transit hubs, onto the Cortina stub axles leaving the 5x160 PCD intact all round.

I have a technical drawing of the Cortina stub axle, can you help with the Transit?

I'm almost certain that the P100 used Transit axles though

The only way to do this is with early, Cortina shape,P100 hubs....

My current thought processes are that I need to buy a set of second hand Cortina uprights and they usually come with the hubs. I have the Transit uprights and hubs in the garage.

If it was possible simply to swap the hubs over, that would be the best (least cost!) solution to keep the same PCD. The other solution is to get the Cortina hubs re-drilled to the correct PCD, this will probably be lower cost than trying to source another set of hubs.

Possible help.
Try checking with a parts supplier to see if the bearings and seal are the same on both hubs. Might give a clue if it is possible to swap hubs over.

I know P100's have 5 stud wheels but I am not sure if the P.C.D. is the same as Transit.

to be clear you mean mk3 not mk4/5 becasuse that part is different on them

i've done drawings of these parts but i'm not sure where they are

what sort of kit car is it

The Transit was a white G-reg mk3. I don't think that a mk4 would work as well, as the rear axle is wider (so I'm told!).

The car will be a Locost, it's a Lotus 7 style car built according to the Haynes book 'Build a Sportscar for £250'. It will cost a bit more than £250, but not as much as a traditional kit, you've even got to fabricate the chassis from plans in the book!

Heavy? Yes, the axle will also pose an issue or two with the mounting, nothing an angle grinder and welder cannot fix!

As the donor van was free, I can live with a bit more weight, makes it more robust for ham fisted drivers like me...

They are. A mate of mine had a front ender in his MK3 and fitted new front stub axles from a P100 he picked up off eBay. While he was at it, he swapped the engine too, the P100's was half the mileage and exactly the same

In fact, I found out that Pinky's engine was originally in a P100
