sticky starter motor

Just bought an n rreg smiley face transit cheap to do up and sell has 150000 6 months mot 5 months tax.

The starter motor is sticking when i turn the key it just whirrss/spins if you know what i mean a knock with a hammer and it starts is it the starter motor i need to replace? cheers

Try taking it out and giving it a good clean inside with WD40 Maybe have congealed grease on the brushes or bendix.

Check power leads for good contact too.

Hi if its any consolation I'm having a little problem with my starter - it has only happened a couple of times but it is the fault where the solenoid just clicks and nothing happens - tap the starter or put van in gear and rock gently and then it is ok. Not sure if needs cleaning out is is just worn, some sort of slightly bad connection within the motor
Last time I looked the motors are held on with torques bolts or something - very difficult to apply any power to in order to undo, and a bit hard to get at to boot.

Sounds like worn brushes. Torx bolts are supprisingly easy to shift with the right bit. Probably best to get an exchange unit rather than try replacing brushes yourself. Transit starters are relativly easy to get at! You don't have to remove manifolds or steering gear as on some other vans...

oh chees for that, maybe when the weather warms up a little I'll see if I can get a good tool to take it off with and investigate!

It's not too bad. Mine was held in place with 3 M8 hex head bolts. Heads had rounded though so it was a bugger to remove the old one. I replaced the bolts with Torx ones.
