Postby devil2k10 » Tue Jan 26, 2010 12:19 am

hi all, i have a 1992 transit 190 lwb recovery truck that shakes like mad when first started in the morning and also i have major amounts of smoke which seems to be diesel, any ideas on how best to fix this or should i take a chance on another engine? its the type with the air box on top! lol thanks :?:

Try an oil and filter change .

You will be surprised at how much difference the correct grade of oil can do to a cold start

Does it shake as if you have a missfire? Could be the idle is just a bit low, open it up to see if the warm idle smooths out. Cold idle.....keep your foot on the gas pedal for a few mins!

Yeah it's missing on a pot when cold, do you get much smoke with it ?

I would guess not, if it's the same as mine. Pulls well when driving but has a constant missfire at idle. Problem is described in the Ford Di manual and is caused by the miniscule amount of fuel injected at idle. Only Ford cure is to remove the injection pump for specialist attention.........or just put up with it! Your choice.

Swapping injectors made no difference.

Give it a dose of Redex or similar and take it for a good blast. This should clear any sticky injectors.

tahnks for all your replies, vanfox it sounds like youve had a similar problem with yours but there is a fair amount of smoke when its first started for the day but its definately diesel smoke, after 10-15mins it drives spot on but is a bit of a bone shaker when idling (nothing like when its first started though), ive been told its a cav pump which are supposed to be crap at best. any ideas other than taking the pump off? have tried fuel treatments etc with no improvement. its a good truck i just have to make sure everyones windows and doors are shut in the street before i start it! lol

if i can harp back what kind of cold start system does it have ? electric with a feed from the diesel cut off going to the pump and then a wire to a switch on the block , or is it water activated with a pull wire running up to the thermostat housing ?

i ask because when mine used to do this with a 70 ps engine it was the cold start doing it , started up ok but lumpy as hell for a couple of min , sfter that it was fine all day and a retro fitted pull wire added by myself sorted it out from in the cab , only time i have had a really lumpy tick over after that was when i had a cracked head

hi all, i have had a good look over it since the snow and bad weather has cleared a bit, thanks for all your responses, it is a lucas cav pump with a solenoid type cable cold start system, when i hold the cold start up and start the engine it idles lovelly, let it go and it idles like crap, what would you suggest is best way to fix, if parts any ideas on where to get as cheap as possible? as for the smoke ive found a slight diesel leak from somewhere at the bottom of the pump tell me if im wrong but this can cause smoke on start up cant it? thanks again
