Injector pump problem <-

Postby CharlieS » Tue Feb 09, 2010 8:28 pm

Hi all,
great forum, it has been helping me alot over the past week but I still have a problem that maybe someone can help me with.

97 smiley transit 2.5 d
Bosch injector pump

Here is how the story goes so far:

Great van working fine, then very occasionally it seemed to misfire for a min or two and normally when i floored it, it sorted itself out it has done this for a while until one day after a long run up to london it happened and then didnt clear up.

I drove it for about 10 -15 miles thinking it would clear up as usual,, but it didn't. There was large amounts of white smoke comming from the exhaust so i called out the AA for a tow and to pick the AA man's brain for some free advise.

He cracked the injectors to try and find the suspect faulty injector and said it was possibly no.1 but didnt know. but suggested checking the injectors and using some injector cleaner on a fairly empty tank.

So the next day with the van safe at home i tryied starting it but had know luck (The van was allways prety hard to start in the mornings but i thought this was just because it was a transit of this year mileage and no glow plugs.a normal issue).

The van wouldnt start so i tyied beeding all the injectors but know luck. injector 1 was finding it difficult to produce fuel and seemed to expel air intermitently and never bled properly.

After doing this for a while i noticed the there was fuel coming from the injector pump where the throttle cable lever enters the pump housing.

So i thought the pump had collapsed inside and this was why the fuel had a problem getting the cly1.

I bought a secondhand pump of a scraped transit on ebay. Fitted it then found it would nt turn over due to the immobiliser then realised that the PATS module on the back of the pump needed swaping for the one on my old pump. So i did this and conected the wire to the stop valve and reconnected everything.( i did forget to place the small plastic cap over the nut that takes the wire onto the stop valve??)

Tryied turning it over and still no fuel from the injector pipes! fuel seems to be getting into the pump though the filter but not out the otherside? not a drop. :-(

i think i can hear the stop valve opening when the ignition is turned on and my head is in the engine bay.

Has any one any ideas...

Thanks, Charlie

Seeing as you've had the back of the pump off, feed a direct live cable to the solenoid and try it again

Yep that's a common place for air to be getting in
replacement parts are only a few quid, but it's a nasty job to do in situ :!:

Air definitely getting in the system badly, shut of valve seems to be working ok when bypassed but only a small spurt of fuel coming from the rear of the pump when the injector pipes are off.

Where is it likely that the air is entering , i think it maybe through the quick release(connect) seals on the fuel filter ,because nothing else has been removed further towards the tank direction.

any one have any ideas, should i connect some kind of small temporary fuel tank to the fuel inlet pipes going to the pump and see if this solves the problem, and if it does the air leak further towards the tank.

thank,s Charlie
