adjusting mileage reading

Postby johny transit » Tue Feb 16, 2010 1:11 pm

Well I just got my new Mondeo dials they look great - will put them on and report back! But is it possible to change the mileage reading? It looks as though the assembly will unclip the front from the back but I don't want to end up with bits all over the place and no idea how to put it back together!
Thanks,

Do you need to wind forward or back? if forward you can do this with an electric drill on the end of the number barrel, if back it's more tricky, is it electronic or cable speedo?

Just take the front off and flick the numbers round.

Right I've dissasambled the unit - the front came off fine and gave me access to the dials but they wont flick or force round at all - looks like because there's a worm gear off the motor so you can turn the worm to rotate the cogs but not the other way around. If I can get the speedo needle off I think I can dissasemble the numbers as I have taken the speedo dial unit out of the assembly ok. Anyone know if the needle will come off, I used just a little force and no joy - don't wanna wreck it!

Remove the fascia panel and unclip the tumbler, it will be a easier to turn the numbers over.
The needle is just pushed on

Ok it is all done...and working!!!
I did manage to get the speedo needle off, it was very stiff indeed and I was concerned about ripping the whole spindle out but it went ok. After that I took out the rotary number unit (three screws on the back of circuit board) but I could not get them to move around at all - seems like they are all locked together internally to each other. So, I took the speedo gubbins off the old clock set (what I mean is the circuit board for the speedo, along with the mileage mechanism, the whole thing) and put that onto the new (smaller) speedo fascia panel. It all went back ok (except I got all the various screws all muddled up even though at the time it seemed perfectly clear) so now I have working rev counter and correct mileage. Only slight problem was that on starting, the speedo went to 20mph so I just took the needle off and with the engine running pushed it back on to 0mph, which was quite difficult to get right so I wouldn't mind checking that the speedo is exactly right so I don't go and get myself a load of tickets but otherwise it is a great job. I now have available the standard clock set for petrol tansit incase there are any takers!
It has to be said I couldn't have done it (indeed hadn't even heard of this mod) without the forum!

I got carried away and filled up the empty bulb holes with bulbs - now I have a coil (?) light on, there was a bulb in that hole in the old clocks, I guess I'll just take the bulb out, or wait for it to blow!
To sum things up - Mk 2 Mondeo 16v Zetec clocks (petrol) work on a W reg petrol transit with electronic speedo!

For future reference easy way to get needles off clocks without damaging them is 2 teaspoons under the base of the needle and lever up

I had trouble getting my speedo right when i did my clocks, when putting the needle back push it on at 6 o'clock and then lift it over the stop, that should be roughly right, you can also check it against a sat nav when driving

Yep I think the speedo is reading a little higher than actual, difficult to tell as I don't have a satnav. I might try that six o clock thing but don't want to keep taking the clocks out to re adjust - it occured to me some bright spark might know how many rpm equals what speed (in a given gear of course) Well I think I was at 2000rpm in 4th reading 44mph, this is a petrol van of course and someone might need to run the thing with my spec to find the axle ratio ect...if anyone is interested - if not guess I'll borrow a satnav and set it up like that. I'm extremely pleased with the mod though. Next stop a set of quality wheel trims!

Speedos always over read a bit

with a 4.56 diff and 185/14 tyres 2000 rpm = 33.5

with a 4.56 diff and 195/14 tyres 2000 rpm = 34.3

with a 4.11 diff and 185/14 tyres 2000 rpm = 37.1

with a 4.11 diff and 195/14 tyres 2000 rpm = 38.1

Speedos typically read up to 10% fast, so I would say your speedo is a little over the top...
