EPIC problems with EPIC

Postby steve@sb » Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:59 pm

hi there, still new to the forum so dont shout at me if this is a repeat of a topic  ive got a 94 ex cop TD tranny running EPIC ive only just bought it but i wa a wear of problems, one of them was not revving and going in to limp home, pull over, turn the engine off, wait 10 seconds and your away again. now this didnt bother the previous keeper but i need it reliable so..........

im looking in to putting on one of those bosch fuel pumps that are easy to turn up, have very little electronics and are very reliable.

id like to know exactly what i need to do this (pump, injectors, pipes etc) and also if someones got everything i need for sale id be very intrested.

im after reliability and more power thats why im think this set up would be best, however, if anyone has any surgestions please feel free to coment.

thanks in advance, steve.

I've been looking it to this recently. Apparently you want to get hold of a bosch pump with numbers ending 145 or 146 and keep the original injectors (or you could put 100ps ones in if it's 85ps at the moment). I think it is better to change the pipes too, but some people have managed with the old ones. I believe you can read the engine codes on the older epic system with a paper clip - do a search to find out. That's always a good place to start :) You may be able to get the epic running good with out too much work. It's great when it working!

This Bosch pump on ebay is advertised as a turbo pump, but I don't know what that is based on you could email the seller for the pump number, going cheap too. I'm sure others will be able to help you better with this, don't just take my advice as I haven't even done the conversion :!:

By the way psv hgv fit, seemed to have solved my epic trouble just by tightening up the fuel connections on the fuel pump, 2000 miles good running so far :) Thanks again for your kind offer of help!

Have to say, great Forum with friendly people. It has been an invaluable source of info for me, saved loads of money on the 3 transits I have owned so far!

sounds like all you need is a new timing belt...

where are you?

If you convert to a bosch you need the pump, throttle pedal and cable. You will also need to advance the pump timing (after setting it all up using the timing pins) and that will be trial and error to get it right.

I would look for the later (post 97) 100PS injectors too.

thanks fellas for the advice :D

being a cop shop special she already comes with a 100ps motor, so the injectors are sorted, as for the cable and pedal box, the only thing i can say is this must be a VERY early TD tranny because i have a convensional throttle pedal, a standard lenth cable coming out the bulk head going to a box (the Throttle Position Sensor) on the passanger side of the bulkhead, so my reconing is i only need pipes and a pump. are the pump pullys interchangable or will i need one off the bosch pump?

and on a different note did ford ever fit a cummins pump to the DI engine? or have i read somthing wrong in a magazine somewhere

Would be best to email the seller to get the pump number. Not sure you can just go off how they look. If it did come off a turbo van it wouldn't have been original to the engine though.

Some sellers who know what they've got (ie. perfect pump for turbo conversion) will try to sell for a lot more. There was one on last week for well over £200 that must have sold! (That was the one I was looking for to show you). Might be best to find a van you can get all the bit off as you need the accelerator pedal too. Good luck!

i wont need a pedal mate, its got a cable on it :D the cables also plent long enough to reach the new pump as it goes ill the way to the passenger side bulk head where the TPS is located.

by the sound of it all ile need is a pump, pipes and pully.

ile give that guy a call on that pump :D

I think bosch pulley is the same as lucas. Note I said post '97 injectors - there is a reason your '94 ones will probably be really smokey

Remember your throttle cable may be too long and/or have the wrong connector

AFAIK all the mk4 turbos had the TPS seperate from the pedal

When was the cambelt last changed that may be the only thing wrong with it...

fair enough - with the late injectors, a bosch pump and an intercooler it has been reported you can get about 130PS
