Rear Springs On Luton Mk5

Postby Carltina » Tue Feb 16, 2010 11:49 pm

Hi all, I noticed my luton leans to the left (n/s). Looking under the back the left leaf springs look flatter, less bowed than the right which I guess means they're tired- odd, it was a one owner bakery van so must've carried very little weight.
Never had any suspension work done on any vehicle. Can I get them from the scrappers or what?

Also, can they be uprated? I assume all mk5 chassis cabs are at least 3.5t inc mine. Lutons are frequently overloaded and mine is only a LWB chassis with an XL (13') box, IE long rear overhang and a lot of weight goes on the back now as I use it for removals.
Can extra leaves be put in for example?

Check the front one on the side it's leaning, isn't broken first

Don't know where you are but places like Paddington Springs in Wembley can either sort out your current springs (DIY) or they can do the whole job for you and if necessary, fit an extra leaf in too :)

Thanks Andy
I'm in Birmingham, so I guess they'll be suspension places here- I never knew such existed.
Is it expensive? When you say they can sort it DIY, you mean they can fix my springs or sell me knew ones to fit myself?

There was a coil spring replaced in the service history, don't know which side. It's snowing so won't look for springs yet.

Just one :?:
Springs are best dealt with in pairs :!:
It could be contributing to your problem :!:

DIY, they can refurb and or beef up your leaf springs (you remove and replace) or you can book it in and they take care of it for you :D

As you're in the Midlands

LOL thanks. Unusually luckily it has a service history. Reading it, they spent a lot over the years but often bit by bit (one tyre at a time) which would explain one spring at a time- it had failed an MOT on a broken one. Small bakery, doubt they had loads of spare cash.
I s'pose if one's worn and the other nearly new, could indeed unbalance things, like people say you should change both front tyres same time.

Ta for Brum springs link will check out.

Cheers John, will check them out. I presume by "heavy duty", they exceed standard 190 rear leaf payload(?)

You are allowed stiffer (or even softer) springs so long as you dont exceed the axle weights.
