Mk5 Rush rear window

Postby rob_887 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:05 pm

Got a Transit recovery truck. Giving it a refurb tring to make it last another load of years.

Its pretty much rust free. Seems to have had new arches and well protected all over.

On the rear where the window is you cant see the rust until you remove the window when i did that today i found out that the little lip that holds the seal in is rusty.

Its not that bad you cant see it when the rubber is on. But i need to sort it before i put the window back in whats the best way to do this ???

angle grinder and wire brush, get rid of all the rust there...

Then you need to make a descision on how bad it is, either weld it up and/or use some filler and then paint it. Try to paint inside too

It bad enough to make a whole but the rear window has two skins on that lip and one skin is perfect no rust at all but the outer skin is holey.
Would one skin be thick enough for the window ???

Its going get some waxoly product inside the whole cavity as i'm guessing thats how its rusting as there was unprotected metal in there.

remember the window is supported the whole way round except the rust part. If the hole is smaller than a 5p after wire brush on an angle grinder treatment I would personally just get the filler out...

Or you could fill the hole with an automotive sealant adhesive like tiger seal

im not sure you can as such...

However I believe the internal bulkhead that you fit inside the van is the same shape except at the sides. Good news is the bulkheads are often kept inside the vans so you should be able to find one with no rust very easily

Yes... you should be able to modify a standard internal bulkhead from a panel van to fix the inside and you might even be able to modify it further to fit certain parts on the outside :D

Have fun :D

Or, if you are feeling particularly adventurous, you could weld on a tailgate from a Tourneo
